Your water supplier has the data on how hard your tap water is. The tank water will be about the same if you do typical maintenance levels of water changes. If you have water over 10 degrees of hardness, it is hard enough.

My mollies are fine without salt as well, we live in a very hard water area.

re baby munching, I find that the mummy molly is really good, but the other mollies in the tank arent so kind, especially the males, if it moves, its food lol

How would I find that out. Do I call the water company because I do weekly water changes of about 10-20 percent.

We have well water. No chlorine, which is a plus, but I'm not sure how to check for hardness.

In Michigan, or Canada, you should be able to just call and ask. Many of the companies post information on the internet and you can find the water data if you know the supplier's name.

Apparently my water is good for them because last night my gold dust mollie had fry! 9 to be exact. Should I leave them in the tank of move them to a breeder net? How long will it take for them to big enough to not get eaten. Like 3 months? I'm new to this and I didn't think they would breed that easily. It took 2 weeks lol. Anyway any advice will help.

It really depends what else you have in the tank. If all you have is mama molly and a few cories, they are probably OK from day 1. If you have the typical community mix, it could be quite a while before fry will get big enough while living in a breeder net. The general guidance is that if the fry will not fit in any of the other fish's mouths, they should be OK, but that really doesn't answer the question. I would guess that in a typical community you would need to wait until they are at least 3/4 inch long.

Hiya

As you know, i recently had baby mollies :D How long does it take them to reach this stage? My ones already got a beer belly but are still tiny!!

ok cool I left them in the main tank. I have mama molly and the other 4 mollies and the corys.

I answered with a size estimate because there are so many factors that influence how fast your fry grow. More and better quality food will speed things as will lots of water changes and warmer temperatures up to a point. A fish that thrives anywhere between 80F and 70F grows faster and dies younger at 80F than at 70F. A fish getting lots of water changes grows faster without losing part of their lifespan doing so. A well fed fish that is getting all they can eat several times a day grows faster than one that is fed once a day and has to skip meals. (Unfortunately that can make even more water changes necessary) A fish fed a large variety of foods so that any nutrient missing in one food is made up for by the variety will outgrow a fish fed any single food. A fish with lots of swimming room will exercise and grow stronger just like people who exercise regularly. I would expect one of mine to be good to go in about 6 weeks but you and I do not use the same approach down to the last decimal so you need to judge by size, not age.

very good advice I think I'm going to make sure I get a second type of food and I'll do a smaller water change every three days
