im getting a 30 gallon tank tomorow and i no the fish i want. would you think these fish would do ok in a medium planted tank. 1 or 2 blue rams 2 dp 1 dojo loach 3 kissing gouramis and 2 cocatoo dwarf chiclid ( probebly wont find 1 but u never no )

i no that the tank will have to go though the cycle and stuff. do you put in plant (live ) while the cycle is still going wheere can u by the cocatoo fish

Cockatoo cichlids, its recommended, to be in a 1 male 2 female ratio. I might be wrong but kissing gouramis get big.

Researched it and kissing gouramis get to 8 inches, too big for a 30 gallon IMO even for 1. Id ditch them and the dwarf puffers, and go for more female cockatoos, and a school or barb, danio, etc.

Try This:

2 blue rams
3 dojo loach
3 cockatoos(1 m, 2 f)
8 Danio/ Barb or large Tetra

I'm not sure about putting 5 cichlids in a 30 gallon but otherwise, bshockstubb's suggestion seems like your best bet.

BTW, one ram alone isn't an option as they need to be in pairs.

well the kissing gouramis will only grow to the size that is your tank like all fish . the bigger the tank the bigger the fish but i no what u meen . y so many dojo loaches  how can u telll the cocatoo fish apart from male and female ? i Also no that the dp dont go well in a comunity but i have one at my grandmas and it does fine so im gona try just 1

i dont like the danios thogh i have some in my other tank i was thinking on getting a blood chiclid ( i no those get BIGGGGGGGGg but i found some at this pet store that would fit it the centre of your hand) is ther any recomended tetras?

STUNTING IS BAD. repeat after me STUNTING IS BAD. that being said...

kissing gouramis are very aggressive, especially in crowded situations. you don't want them to be the biggest fish in the tank. that little kissing thing they do will rip the scales and eyeballs right off your other fish. the worst thing i've ever seen was the low man on the kissing gourami totem pole. i could almost see through it, so many scales were missing. even bigger fish are at risk from kissers.

two sets of breeding chiclids is risky in a 30g, but you might could do it. dojos like to live in schools and will do better holding their own against the cichlids in a group like that.

i with you on zebra danios, but i saw some really gorgeous pearl danios at the local PetCo today. if you get the opportunity, you should check them out. they'd look great with rams. i personally adore emporer tetras, but they get like 4 inches or so. you'd only want maybe 5~6 of those.

i wouldn't bother with the dp, especially since it looks like you'll be wanting some fry out of this arrangement. my experience is that you can have 30 fry and no puffer or 3 fry and 1 puffer. of course, i own guppies, who are terrible parents. a cichlid might be able to fight off a dp, but not without considerable damage to both. even neglecting fin-damage, breeding cichlids simply do not do well with an efficient predator like a puffer. its a situation where somebody is definitely going to lose (and maybe both).

really you'll be full with the cichlids and just some dither fish like danios/barbs/tetras anyways.

You really might want to check your facts on that. That's called stunting, it's bad for the fish.
How would you like being kept in a closet your entire life just because you fit in there?

NOT to make you feel like Shi* but i think that myth is only somewhat true. sometimes fish will grow to their tank size, but their organs and things on the inside keep growing and their bodies can't handle it or somthing like that and they die earlier than they should, don't overstock you're tank :)

1)do your research!
2)listen to what we say,we probably know better
3)dont ask questions only not to listen to the answer
4)read the pinned topic in New World Cichlids entitled "Rams Apistos and Keyholes:What you need to know"(in case you never knew Dwarf Cockatoo cichlids are Apistos)the pinned topic will answer your questions about this Apisto.
5)dwarf Puffers wont go in a community,
:)

sorry if i sounded harsh or mean(i wasnt trying to be) but if you follow those 5 steps im sure you will have a much happier and healthier fish tank.
