how do you judge a good betta?

Ive had my female for about 6 months and I think shes a stunner, but to be fair I saw her, fell in love an purchased straight away.

If purchasing more, what should i look for in regards to a prize winner?

Well IMO judge a Betta with 3 things Finnage Size and Color Like my red Female CT she had beatiful CT tail and was pure red about 3 inches long she was beatiful.But now shes very sick with Fin Rot And fungus.

in terms of showing bettas in competition? there are soo many variables that i can't even begin to list them all. sometimes it's a judges discretion too, what he or she personally likes. look for finnage, everything should be there, colour is important, there are different classes for different colours, red "wash" anywhere is a big no-no. a half-moon should be almost a perfect circle in shape, 180 degree fin span, no gaps in between fins either. if you really want to know check out the IBC website. they are the International Betta Congress, their standards are respected world-wide.
