If that's the case its not a race I think it is by the number of posts you make

I do not know how many posts you need to write your own be honest the title I have does not really bother me and the opportunity to write my own does not really factor into why I am a member but some people are into it "what ever floats your boat I guess"

It definitely annoys me when people post for the sake of posting. But yes, over 'x' amount of posts you get different titles and eventually get the choice to write your own.

I like it cause it's a nice way of adding your own little personalised quote/message however it's not really that different to simply putting it in your sig so yah know. Don't rush.

I have no idea if there is a count involved. You do it by editing the line directly in your profile.
Start by going to My Settings, then choose the Profile tab. Scroll down to Public Information and fill in the line marked Member Title. If you save that profile, the title will appear in place of the automatic ones.
