How Do You Cool Your Tank?

I live in scotland! that tends to be a good way of keeping a tank at the right temp!

Why is it that your turning the heater off btw?

Simply because at the moment I'm using a temporary internal juwel heater and they are notorious for failing thermostats so I thought why run the risk when it doesnt need to be plugged in at the min?

I used to use the hydor external heater but changed external filter and it no longer fits my diameter tubing so I need to buy the other version of the hydor, just havent got round to it yet lol

It was only about 2 months ago that my gf's dad lost £200 quid worth of fish as his internal juwel heater failed and we came home one day to find the water at about 38 degrees.

I've been a bit worried about my Squirrels in QT, hence the thread I started the other day. On days where I've found the tempertaure to be higher than 28C when I got back from work, I've done ~50% water change using just cold water. In this 60l tank, this has dropped the temp down to ~24/25C, which should get a better level of oxygen in the water from my Koralia 1 and Juwel 1000 pump both rippling the surface quite heavily plus create a good stream current for them too.

I've read somewhere that it is dangerous to drop the temp during water changes by >5C, as this could bring on stress-related allnesses like Ich...

However, what happens to the temperature of the stream/river water in the Indian monsoon season?

I dont have to turn it off, but a failure of a thermostat is exactly that, A FAILURE, there is no knowing how it will fail so why take the risk?

My gf's dads heater that failed wasnt on at the time as the tank temp was well below the minimum set on the heater but it somehow managed to turn its self on and didnt go back off.

Better to be safe than sorry until I at least replace it with a hydor eth that fits as they are fantastic heaters
