Hey all! I got a betta today. I read that the temperature is supposed to be at least 74 degrees farenheit. I put the thermometer in it and got a reading of 72 degrees. I can't get a heater because it is in a 2.5 gallon tank. how can I raise it and keep it there?

They do make mini-heaters that are for mini tanks. Look for a heater 10 watts or less, Marineland and Marina make a 10 watt heater, then Hydor and Zoo Med make some 7.5 watt heaters. Other than a heater I can't think of a reasonable way to keep the heat up constantly other than keep it in a warm room. Good luck on the betta!

a 25w heater would work fine, these fish need heaters to stop the temperature changing so much, may not be the case in summer but in winter you will definately need 1

I also use a 25 watt heater if I ever need to keep a betta in a 2.5 gallon tank (I use them for quarantine whenever I get a new fish or as backup homes in case something goes wrong with my cycled tanks).

Be careful with the Hydors, though! Both of the Hydor 25 watt heaters I've had heat the water of a 2.5 gallon to a much higher temperature than the temperature setting on the thermostat. Typically, if I set my Hydor to 71 degrees Farenheit, it heats the tank to about 78 degrees. I'm not sure if this is still the case, since I haven't bought a new Hydor in the last few years.

My Marineland Visi-therm is much more accurate. If I set it to 78 degrees, the tank stays at 78 degrees.

If you don't have a permanent aquarium thermometer in your betta's tank, I strongly recommend getting one if you're going to be using a heater. It can be your first clue if the heater malfunctions and either overheats or underheats the water.
