As in title, really 
Sorry if there's already a thread dedicated to this but I don't think I've found it yet!
If there isn't I'd like the info in steps if you could - other new members may benefit too, especially if they've never had a planted tank before (like me)! All I need to know is how to plant the tank, when to put the plants in and how to care for the plants once they're in and a part of the aquarium.
eg; what type of substrate do I use, how thick a layer should there be etc. Thanks!
EDIT: Also, If anybody can recommend a good filter for a 120L tropical tank then that'd be great. The tank has a lid on it with a modest opening at the back, between the hinges.
