How Do I Measure Fish?

I'm trying to ID one of my cory and I think I have it, but the measurement given for the species is shorter than the fish I have. It would make sense if the tail was not included in the measurement, but I don't know if this is how it's done. That's how it's done when determining the total number of length of fishes in your tank, but I don't know about this other factor.

Generally its not including the tail, however some many places and people do different things, best thing to do is read up on multiple sites,books etc, then speak to people who are intrested in that purticular field, posting pictures can help id alot easier, also sizes to fish are a guide, in the wild they grow much bigger than those kept in aquarium, so sometimes wild caughts are much bigger, biggest oscar i ever saw was a wild caught in colombia, was around 14inch and chunky as you like
