How Do Fish Breed?

Thats a very complex question, there are lots of different ways that fish breed. Are you interesting in any in particular?

Well son, you have a mummy fish and a daddy fish.

you get loadsa little :fish: :fish: :fish:

Just a bit of lighthearted lol........sorry, ignor me...I have no idea how they do it...but they do and how!

It depends on the species. Most species are egglayers, so the female lays the eggs and the male then ejcts his sperm over them. The eggs hatch and depending on the species the parents either care for them, ignore them or eat them. Females of egglaying are never "pregnant" though they can be eggbound. This means females of egg-laying species can only make babies if there is a male in the tank at the time when the eggs are laid.
Then you have the livebearers, which practice internal insemination, i.e. the male has to insert his sperm into the female. The eggs then develop and hatch inside the female and she gives birth to live young. Some livebearers even have a primitive system of the fry being nourished from their mother's body, similar to that of mammals though not the same. Many livebearer females can store sperm and give birth to more fry months after they last set eyes on a male.
There are even some half-way houses where the male inseminates the female, but she lays fertilised eggs at a later stage.
