How Cold Is To Cold For A Betta?

This seems to be the ongoing trend with durbkats threads lately....... Someone is just not getting it..... We are getting exhausted giving advice that gets nothing but a childish eyeroll, a no, and the attitude that our opinions do not matter...... It's becoming very annoying....... I for one am done responding with help to any of your questions....... and I see many others are feeling the same way....... If you don't want to listen to what we have to say, then I suggest you go to a board that gives you all the answers you want and one that doesn't give a damn about how your fish are living in less that sub-par conditions.....

A-F'n-Men!! **claps**

I think some people just like to stir the sh*t in the pot up on purpose.
I think some people like to exargerate things, and some even make things up to get attention or have something to talk about.
I also think some people need to get a life if that's the best they can come up with on a daily basis.

That being said, I think you are right Rio...no more advise for him/her..cas they don't deserve it...This person knows exactly HOW to care for the betta (not like they don't have enough resources to read up on it around here) and yet refuses although continues to ask questions looking for answers (of some nature)...and then wants to tell someone else to go to Hell..*makes a scoffing sound* sounds about right for this day and time.

I agree with his avatar..that is exactly how we all feel at this point. Glad he was able to actually pick something out that makes sense for once.

durbkat asked me to find out why he got banned from the healthybettas forum. i never did because it's none of my concern, but i'm guessing this type of behavior had something to do with it.

don't ask questions with the expectation that you will only get answers that you want to hear. that's not how it works, and that's doubly true when you are remiss in your betta care methods.

heh, well that sure explains alot.

lol sure that reasoning works...when you live in a box with yourself as king.

Ok so let's give the kid a little bit of a break....

1. Yes, we know that 1/2 gallon isn't the optimum amount of water for a betta... but, consider how many bettas there are in the world that are living in less than that. I'm sure almost all petstore/walmart bettas end up in containers that are smaller than 1/2 a gallon.

2. Surely most all of those millions of petstore/walmart bettas that are in less than 1/2 gallon containers are not being kept with heaters that provide a constant temperature.

At the very least Durbkat is making somewhat of an effort to take care of his bettas by insulating the bowls with towels and by allowing the temperature in his room to get warm overnight.

I certainly don't agree with him about keeping his bettas in the 1/2 gallon bowls, but there's really nothing that we can do about it.

i don't think using pet stores and walmart as an example is really the best idea. those containers are intended to be temporary housing, and presumably their new owners will provide for them properly. pet stores/walmart also put large numbers of goldfish into a 10 gallon tank, but i don't think anyone would argue that this is a good or even acceptable thing to replicate at home. the level of care found in a pet store or other chain type store is not what you should be striving for in most cases.

it's not even so much that as the "ask a question, don't get desired answer, ignore answer and roll eyes" type behavior. it's difficult to want to help when you know your input will be disregarded if it doesn't fit what he wants to hear.

I was trying not to dirty my hands with this thread, but I give in.

Seriously Durbkat, ask yourself; why you aren't upgrading your betta's tank?

Is it that it's too expensive? Surely you can save up the $2-$3 a 1 gallon bowl or kritter keeper would cost. Christ, just buy a tupperware tub for $2, or buy a 1 gallon jug of water... then you could use the contents as well! I'm sure if you were to ask around at local restaurants one would even have a 1+ gallon jar they'd be willing to give you for free.

Is it that you don't have the room? If I can make room for as many tanks as I have in my two little dungeons of rooms that are already filled with an unbelieveable amount of crap, you can make room for one more half of a gallon on your desk.

So, ruling out the first two options, the only possible reason I can see for you not having upgraded your betta is that you're either just plain lazy or you don't care. That betta is a living thing, man, and what's more is it's in your care. That fish is completely at your mercy. He doesn't eat if you don't feed him and can't move to better waters if his water quality is less than optimal. I almost feel bad for my bettas that live in 1 gallons because of the lack of space, it's hard for me even to imagine what they'd look like cooped up in 1/2 a gallon. You've got to wake up and realise that your fish would probably enjoy being able to actually move, nevermind how much better water parameters would stay.

If you stacked them how would they get oxygen? Also if you have these lets see a pic.

Okey dokey, just a sec. You make a hole in the container, serves as a feeding hole and airhole. I know some breeders use similar things for fry (5g or so ones), I'll look for a pic of theirs too later.

EDIT- Hmm, I can't find the camera to pc cable, so for now you'll have to stick with a photo of the two 1.5g containers on top of each other. I'll probably be putting a betta in the top one tonight/tomorrow. You can't see the airhole, I took a pic earlier but can't put it on the pc :X But you see where the top one indents in on the left side? Its in the lid of the bottom one where the indentation is.

Exactamente :shifty: Although, I'm not 100% sure that these would be big enough for adults, they're long but not *highly* wide... I'll measure them later, maybe put Claudius (full growm vt, big fins) in the top one, see how it looks.

Here we are, found the cable.

Ohhfeeshy thats all they need for air is that little hole? Thats amazing. For everyone else I don't like it when people are mad at me and I will be going to my lps this weekend and get 1.5g tanks for the bettas ok. ;)

You can easily make the airhole bigger. I also take the lid off once a day for some fresh air, but they seem to do just fine :dunno:. Its not that little, it's got a diameter of about 1cm.
