How Can You Tell A Good Lfs

Last time I was in PetCo a man wanted to buy a little albino oscar. The lady started to quiz him about tank size and other fish in the tank. He didn't know, said it was for his girlfriend. She wouldn't sell him the fish. They are OK in my book.

When they try and sell you a common pleco to eat poo because they think you dont know any better... LEAVE

When they try and force you into buying a bottle of bacteria by saying that it is really great and will make my tank balanced... LEAVE

When they sell you a dead fish... LEAVE

When they ask you if you want to treat a sick fish you have spotted at home... LEAVE (Although i probably would, i wouldnt make a habit of it)

Frogs in a pihrana tank??? LEAVE

almost didn't sell me 5 otos because I had to many fish to early (doing the silent cycle!)

I think he means that the LFS offers to let him take one of their sick fish home with him.

I would treat my own fish but i wouldnt make a habit of treating the stores fish that they have asked if i would like to treeat at home

I would never ask for any advice usually from petco/petsmart employees. I've been given bad advice a few too many times. The only reason I go to these stores is to look at stuff for my tank, then go home and order it online because it is usually 50% cheaper.

There is only one reputable LFS by me that I have found, but the only downfall is that their fish are usually twice the price of those at petco/petsmart, but this LFS actually knows what they are talking about.

I bought 4 kuhli loaches in my time... 3 alive one dead

only bought 3 coz 1 died and i replaced him...

i agree, p@h have sold me amazing fish and none have ever died (except from colin who jumped the tank and died on the stone plinth under the tank)

Have to agree with SBS. Any shop can be bad. Chain stores have some good ones, some bad. It the way that shop is run by the manager and staff that make it good or bad.
Tesco's had good and bad supermarkets, the one closest to us has "special offers" listed on many items but they're never put through on the tills so unless you check your reciept you don't know that your actually paying full price and not the "special offer".
Please think before you type.

I was replying to another thread and thought this might be a fun topic. You have to reply in one line.

I need to find a good LFS nearby for stock and advice (in addition to you all) and forget about PetSmart. How do you know a good LFS when you find it?

Tell them you have a 75L tank and ask how many clown loaches you can keep. If they say a number greater than ZERO; move on.

Haha, my pets at home had half eaten gourami and stuff in their tank, i bought 3 gourami's from there 2 weeks ago when the gourami tank looked good. 2 are now dead

Never going there again.
