Hot Weather - Increasing Temp In Tanks

Hi everyone,

Can someone tell me the best way to keep my tank at 24c. Currently having a bit of a heat wave in london, and the temp has increased to 28c (Heater currently switched off).

Open the lid (assuming you have no jumpers), open your windows, close the curtains, keep the tank lights off, do a partial water change with cold water, some people use old drinks bottles, filled with cold water and put in the freezer, once frozen, float them in the tank.

Unless you have particulary sensitive fish, they will be fine, as they are in the tank whilst the water is warming up.

You can also run a fan over the top of the tank, make sure it cant fall in obviously

Four of my five tanks are currently running near 30c, everyone is fine, including the goldfish.

I'll be doing my weekly water change tonight, will keep me and the fish cooler, that's if I have enough energy when I get home phew.

You shouldnt need to switch the heater off as its regulated and should only kick in when the temp drops! Dangerous thing to do as you may forget to switch it back on again when the heatwave is over!

I'm in London but strangely my tanks have only risen about 2 or 3 deg. to exactly 80 deg. now so not too bad. Remember even in the heatwave of 2003, when it was in the high 90's outside they only got to 86 deg. and my fish were fine. They're more active at higher temperatures!!

i keep my tanks at 28 anyway, im in london, the heater hasnt been operational as it dosnt heat over that temp, why did you turn yours off... it wont affect the temp

lol , mines running @ 32 , and the temp was set to 27c , the only reason i havent got my 1st ever fish is because of the heat , cant be bothered messing about with bottles and fans ....

are young galaxy rasbora classed as 'sensitve' fish because their tank is at 30-32 everyday now and am wondering weather i should do some of the things which minx suggested

One thing to remember that the warmer the water the lower the oxygen content so be sure to have loads of water surface aggitation

Been away for a while, thank you everyone for your input. Heatwave is over! ( and now my fridge has died, but that is another story). Fish are fine.
