I recently read that Hornwort, when in good growing conditions, can secrete a substance that inhibits most algae growth. Anyone have any experience or opinions on this?

Not sure about Hornwort individually, but ANY fast growing plant will compete with Algae for sustinence and reduce it's growth.

Yes hornwart does indeed do that. It puts a chemical into the water that algae doesn't like and can't grow.

Wow! Had no idea that hornwart did that. I just got some yesterday (my lfs gave it to me for free!) for my 2.5 gallon (I put a sprig in my 1/2 gallon with Pinkie too).

There are other plant "extracts" that inhibit algal growth. I'm trying to persuade the local authority here to try this.

The hornwort in my tank grow so fast I don't know what to do with it all!!!! Seems to gather up alot of free floating particles in the water also...although I do get a bit of a problem with hair algae growing on it!!!!

Same here.... hair algae seems to love Hornwort. So thats not the algae it inhibits
