Homemade Substrate

Has anyone ever collected there own substrate instead of going to a store and getting it?

Surely a vinager test and soaking the rocks would make it safe?

(I realise substrate isn't that expensive but I was curious)

I collect all my rocks from the stream down the bottom of the garden, leave them to soak in some boiling water, give them a scrub and then put them in the tanks. Never had a problem and saved myself a lot of money.

I've used some rocks I've found as well. As long as you really clean it, you should be fine!

I've collected all my rocks, and the sand I use is $5 for a 50lb bag.
