Homemade Divider For Agressive Cichlids

I made one out of netting and suction cups but it took my sev about a day to work out how to get out of it. You can buy them for tanks not sure if they go big enough for you but I think next I will try egg crate because of how tough it is :)

And I also have a question. Why is it called "Eggcrate" ? What does it have to do with eggs ?

genius hamfist!! that is such a good site will def keep it favorited :D

I had to make a DIY divider so that i could keep 3 juvi female Jack Dempseys in a 3ft tank with my 6" male EBJD and enable them to live in harmony whilst the three juvi females grew up and my male was able to select a breeding partner. After going to a few LFS they either had bad advice on what to do, or sold really poor dividers that were too small to even begin to concider. So i took a mooch through the pond section in my local(ish) A5 Aquatics and found what appears to be eggcrate. Wasnt labelled as eggcrate but its just like it so iassume it is, originally for a pond filter in someway :look: So i bought it, cut it down to size and then made lots of random bigger holes in it to allow all my fish to pass through it except my big brute male EBJD :) It worked, it enabled my females to grow up and whenever they wanted to be away from the male they could escape to a side of the tank that was male free :)Perhaps something similar can be divised for yourself, without the extra swimming holes though :)

Have you thought of using a waste bin. The thick plastic ones used for offices and bedrooms. They are usually very cheap and have seen people in asia use them in tanks and ponds to seperate fish. Goldfish farm breeders use them alot, and they are very good.
I used a clothes basket when i introduced my flowerhorn to my tank, to see how he would interact with the other fish.

Similar to verminator, try some plastic sewing canvas, you can pick it up from your local hobycraft, it's what i used to divide my tanks

how about going to a glazier and asking for a cutoff of glass? ive got a peice of glass between my breeding convicts and the others seems to do the trick :good:
