Can you change an HOB filter to a sponge filter by getting some open cell sponge and cutting a slit on the top of it and putting the sponge over the intake? Thanks.

Putting very much sponge over the intake would potentially slow the flow rate a lot, even with open cell sponge material, but I probably don't have enough direct experience with this to be commenting...

if you are making your own sponge filter, which is really easy btw and if you want some assistance id be happy to advise...ive made quite a few of them and have them in all my fishtanks, there is no better method than using the media from an existing cycled filter to build it. if you use all the media from your current filter it will instantly cycle the diy sponge filter.
cheers

You can have the same effect, as far as saving fry, by placing a sponge over the inlet as you have suggested. This is a large sponge like the one I put over the inlet on my HOB.

This is one of those sponges after it had been in place for about a month. So far it has been cleaned a few times but the HOB is being fully protected and just does not get dirty.
