Okay so I have a retention pond in my backyard, its FILLED with these mosquitofish, which are close relatives to the guppy. Female guppies and mosquitofish look very alike and it has been said that they can crossbreed with guppies. Soo if I maybe bought some male guppies at petco and then released them in the wild, could I get arrested? I think it would actually be pretty cool to have some color on those fish. I have one in my tank (I caught him from the pond) and they are pretty dull and boring fish. So I I released some guppies and they bred with the female mosquitofish and created a cross bred fish, would I be in trouble? lol. Personally I think that would be pretty cool... I could just grab a bucket and get guppies any time I please lol =D

yes you could be prosecuted and if the authorities found out...you will be arrested and it will push the government even further into introducing the bill against keeping tropical fish.

could you explain why its illegal to crossbread a fish ?. arnt people legaly doing it all the time, just look at parrot fish and most goldfish.

If i had 2 breeds of dog i could breed them with no problems, whats different with cross breeding fish. morally i think its wrong but why ilegal

introducing non native species into the wild is illegal, releasing hybrids is also illegal

I don't know that you will be arrested for that but hope that they do arrest you for it if you are foolish enough to do it.

There is very little that is more irresponsible than releasing fish into the environment that come from your tank. It doesn't even matter if the same fish are already present in the wild. Your fish have been confined to a very intensely populated environment that is subject to rapid disease spreads that would be unheard of in the fish's natural environment. Once released your fish then become the latest disease carriers in that environment. There is a simple rule that may just possibly allow some of us to continue to enjoy our hobby. Once something is removed from the environment, locally or at the other end of the world, it can never go back.

About cross breeding. mosquito's will not cross with guppies, and even in if you did introduce them then mosquito's will kill the guppies.

So it's a pointless tack resulting in dead fish!!!

Can u get a pic of the mosquito's also?

I'm not sure on hybrydising these fish. But this retention pond, is it in your own property and does it connect to public waterways? If it's your own property that's isolated from the wild then surely you can do whatever you want with it?

i am going to have to agree with oldman47,He is right what you did was stupid and foolish, and did you know you could have messed up a hole ecosystem,a family in a small town in my state kept fish called snake heads in a pond right near a lake, they can leave the water that they are in for food, and the whole lake was killed in 2 months, cause they will eat any thing, many things can go wrong, its people like you that does one stupid thing and mess's up the whole ecosystems killing many inosent trying to get survive animals

HEY HEY! Slow down don't go calling me stupid and foolish I didn't even do it! Maybe if you read the whole question, you would understand that I was just asking if I could get in trouble for it. So don't go making insults when you don't even know what you're talking about. And by the way everyone and just a small pond in my backyard. Runoff water. It's only like 8 feet across and eight feet down. I'm not really sure if I own it or not, but I don't think anyone would care, and it doesn't lead anywhere. As for the picture I will upload one later when I can figure out this stupid camera :good:

Well actually I have kept mosquito's in community tanks, some of them were aggressive, and some were peaceful and didn't mind eachother. It pretty much just depends on the fish. Like I have only one currently, and she wouldn't hurt a fly, she protcts my molly fry from the rainbow shark. And my neighbors caught some and put them in their tank, I tried giving them some fry and one of their mosquitofish swallowed one whole. (Luckily I removed the other three before they wee harmed.)

Dyslexia is when you have trouble getting things into the right order or the right sequence like being able to see the difference between right and left pointing letters. People with dyslexia will often have a hard time recognizing the difference between a b and a d for instance. I don't see how it applies to just not taking the time to read through the whole post though. I also object to putting words in my mouth, I never called anyone stupid but still feel strongly that releasing tank bred fish into the wild is very irresponsible.
