The pH range is so wide, they can't get the full scale on a single test. That is why you have a regular test and a high test. It really depends on what your pH is as to whether you need one or the other. If you use the regular test and get a reading of say 6.6, then there in no reason to test with the high one. If, however, you get a reading at the top of the scale (7.6 for the API kit), then you need to use the high test to see what it is. If the pH is 10, it would still only show as 7.6 (or wht ever the top number is) on the regular kit. Same applies in the other direction. If your pH is 6.6, then the high test would show the lowest number on the chart.
