When you say high, how high?
Overfeeding could cause spikes within your waters parameters.

That could be your answer, I'm sure i have read threads in the past where fertilizers have been added and then have been presented with changes within there waters chemistry.
2ppm for nitrAtes is very low or did you mean nitrIte?
To see if the introduction of the fertilizers is the cause you could get a bucket of tap water, mix some of your fertilizer in and then test it.

its the NITRITES !! a very nice PURPLE colour am using api master test kit ! will try testing the water with fertilzer thanks again :good:

I would do a serious waterchange 75% at least, test again a while later,it still over zero do another large waterchange, you fish will be suffering with that amount of ammonia and nitrite....

A FERTILIZER SHOULD NOT RAISE NITRITES

I have a sneaky feeling this is not going to be the cause which would mean 1)doing a large water change to bring your ammonia/nitrIte levels down and 2)still having to find the cause, e.g overfeeding, forgetting to dechlorinate tap water, over cleaning filter media.

How long has the tank been set up? and what fish stock do you have in there?

tank has been running for 6 months , i did clean the filter media out with tank water yeasterdy ?
its 180 ltr , stocked with , x2 clowns , x4 rainbow x1 l177 ,x5 buoneries tetras , x5red eye , 2 plats , x1 silver shark x2 angels

i have recently changed to play sand so quite a few water changes recently thanks again
also have decloranated tap water as usual !!

Its not the fertilisers.

Have you counted your fish? Is one missing? Are your plants all healthy or is one looking a bit brown?

All these can add ammonia & nitrite.

It really depends upon how badly the plant is rotting. Only one plant rotting in a decent sized tank as a 180l causing a sudden rise to 2ppm in both ammonia and nitrite, at least in my view is not possible. Pics would definitely help i suppose of the plant to actually see how rotted (is that a word?) it is. How was the filter cleaning as you said you did in tank water? was it a slight squish of the sponges or a rigorous one?

Is it brown all over or just a few leaves?

It could be a mini spike after a mixture of cleaning the filter and substrate change, for now large w/c's are the way to go,test daily and do w/c has necessary, keep both the ammonia & nitrite at zero if you can,or it'll just keep building and you'll start to lose fish.

Feed very minimum, this will help to keep it down.- If you suspect someone else is feeding them, tell them to stop.Perhaps you can feed them when you come home from work?

well half way through my water change i noticed that the power head on the fiter was not located propely could this of caused the overnight spike ?
