High Nitrate Advice

Hi, i have just done a water test and my nitrate is 40ppm. I am led to believe this is the highest it should be. What could i do to lower the nitrate if the reading gets higher.
All my other stats are fine. These readings were done after a water change using a API test kit.

What is your tap water nitrate levels?

to be honest i have never tested it.The readings have always been around 20ppm. i will have to test the tap water

My nitrate is 40 from the tap. 40 isn`t considered abnormal and many fish can live quite comfortably with that. I guess it all depends what fish you`re keeping. I may be wrong but IF it`s a mix of species that can`t tolerate high nitrates you could possibly look at using RO water

I have platys, mollies and some harlequins in the tank. It just that i have read you don't want the nitrates to go over 40ppm. They all seem fine at the moment, i will do regular tests to keep an eye on things
