Hi everyone, just starting out and we have got ourselves a fluval edge. I see from some of the posts on this forum they are a bit like marmite... you either love them or hate them! Anyway i think it will be a good starting tank. We have set it up with gravel, a few rocks and a few live plants and it is looking good so far.

Very much enjoying reading through the posts on this fantastic forum and am already learning a great deal.... :)

Hi welcome to the forum! I nearly bought a fluval edge myself today they would make an excellent home for a school of Galaxy Rasbora. The main problem with them is that they are quite limiting due to their small size (especially for the price) but you can make them look stunning! And if you do it properly you can get quite a good variety of fish in there.

But if you have joined this forum you will end up wanting a bigger tank  I started with an 8 gallon and then moved to a 30g now on a 65g and planning for a 120g :)

Thanks for the warm welcome... it is mind boggling how technical this all is...but looking forward to getting some fish in there now.... just need to work out which ones now!!! -_- but before we do there is the cycling to figure out :S my head hurts already!

Nah cycling is a lot easier than you expect just time consuming but 1000% worth it. All you need is an API master test kit and a bottle of pure ammonia. Add a few milliliters of ammonia each day and until your filter is ticking it through in under 12 hours and then your ready for fish. When I say ticking over when you first add ammonia and do a water test with the kit I mentioned you will see ammonia at 4/5 and then over time it will drop to 0 then the same thing will happen with nitrite in the tank and gradually you will be growing and training a colony of bacteria in your filter and this will make it suitable for fish.

One thing to point out is that the bacteria in a bottle type products you see in the shops are very unreliable due to the fact that they are not regulated in any way and go off in the shop because to keep the bacteria for a fish tank alive they either need to be a. Provided with a source of oxygen and ammonia and nitrite or stored in a refrigerated environment from the moment it is produced which they never are as they are often just boxed in a warehouse then shipped in the open and then in the shop on a shelf. So I wouldnt really even bother buying them.

Its particularly important with this tank as most of the small fish that are suitable for it are quite delicate and would not survive a fish in situation. Using the ammonia means that you dont add fish for a few weeks but when you do add them it means you will be able to do so in confidence that they wont die or get sick in the first few weeks.

A few of the species that you could consider for your tank would be

Badis fish
Dario Dario
Pygmy Gourami
Green Neon Tetra (but not the common blue ones)
Galaxy Rasbora
Chilli Rasbora
Sparrow Rasbora
Cherry Shrimp
Male Endlers
Bee Shrimp
Tiger Shrimp
Blue Shrimp

Though obviously not all of those species a few example stock lists would be something like

4 x Pygmy Gourami
5 x Cherry Shrimp

or

6 x Chilli Rasbora
5 x Cherry Shrimp

or

6 x Galaxy Rasbora
5 x Cherry Shrimp

or

2 x Badis fish
6 x Galaxy Rasbora

Personally I would go for the galaxy rasbora just because of the massive amount of colour you get from them. Nearly any stocking plan in this tank should include shrimp, they will give your tank a little more diversity and are now available in so many colours and due to their small size will not impact on the waste load on the filter.

Welcome to the forum David.
Cycling your tank is an important first step to successfully keeping fish. Right now my tank #26 is only partly cycled so I am doing the newbie thing and doing daily water changes for my new Betta simplex pair. I had hoped to breed them but stepped on the top step that just wasn't there when my long running filter proved to only be partly cycled. It had run side by side with my mature filter in another tank for about 2 months before I tried to use it and found out the hard way that it was not ready.
