Hi just wanted some thoughts on this, Ive been offered this beaut of a Severus from someone on an other forum that lives right round the corner from me and it just seems too good to pass up. Long story is below but the short version is, Severus are known to stay smaller than the normal Efasticious sevs you see in the shops. This is a 3 year old female and she is 5 inches without tail so I would take that as fully grown due to the age and this is her picture.

(hope you dont mind me using this craig, if you see it)

As some of you may know I have a thing for Severums. But I fully accepted that my tank just isnt big enough for the standard ones you see in the store in the long term. However I started looking into the Heros family just to see how many there were and what the variety was like with sizes, colours, markings etc and it turned up a few interesting things. In particular the fact there are a lot more species of severum than I imagined, I mean we all know of the Efasticous (spelling), Rotkiel and Notatus and possibly you will have heard of the mouthbrooding Severus but there are so so so many more that are just .sp names like Belum and Tapajo.

So in my reading I found out that Heros Severus gets smaller than Efasticous on average the Severus will only reach 7/8 inches max. So I thought yeah that is probably the top end of my size limits right now but if I could find a female they would stay smaller and probably reach a similar adult size to my female nic, though the sev will be obviously taller though.

So what do we think? Do you think a female could fit in my stock right now? Current stock is in my sig Just to throw in an other thread to this, I am upgrading in about 6 months (at a guess) I graduate in 3 and the flat goes on the market in 4 so we can move pretty soon and the new tank is a priority for me (as is a big lounge with a concrete floor :hey: )

Personally I feel that it should work, especially because my geos are only around 2 inches at the moment so not worried about over stock issues as its going to be a year before they have any size on them at all and the new tank will easy be here by then.

Ive already spoken to a few people about this on here through PM and theyve said go for it but just want a few more opinions first because I can hardly believe my luck lol :)

Personally I cant really see a problem, especially with an upgrade on the cards, the only other thing is to go for a juvi serv so it can grow out a little in the tank you have now ready for the bigger tank.

Actually how big is the nic?, maybe better with the bigger one rather than a juvi. She is a really pretty fish.

Sounds like this could be the one. I would do it if I were you.

Cool thanks guys :)

star - nic is about 3 inches but growing fast at the moment, but also the the way the tank is at the moment the sev wont be able to get under the wood where my nic has taken as home. So if things flare up nic does have places to go, but she sounds peaceful and is in with baby geos at the moment. Might try to arrange to go see her sometime

You should be ok, my nics never bothered the servs and vice versa, personally with the nic at 3" I would deffo go with the bigger serv rather than a juvi.

yeah Ive just messaged him to see when I can go round will hopefully be either Thursday or Saturday and I mean if things start to look really bad he is not far away at all (closer than most LFS to me) and Im sure he would be able to take her back.

Agreed with the above, At 3 years old, I wouldn't think she is going to grow too much more and looking at your stocking atm, you have the space and filtration IMO,

She will certainly be a great addition to any stocking and if your like me you will really regret it if you pass it by,

Yeah think im getting her Saturday :D Thanks guys :) Just wanted to run it past you all before I got it and Ive got all thumbs up :D

very nice, if it does get on with your nic it will be a very nice addition, i've not really kept them for ages so can't comment on temperament, i do have ten rotkeils but they are still young, they are starting to look good, was just going to keep a pair but starting to think all 10 as a group would look pretty good!

if you do get it we will be waiting for some nice pictures of it in your tank!!

haha Ive aranged to get her Saturday.....though he has just got some nice new ones I want to steal H.spurius  ....hmmm
