ph - either7 or 8.5
amnonia-stayed white color
nitrite-2.0
nitrate-pinkey white color

Again, why with the new topic for every little thing? What test kit are you using? What does 'amnonia-stayed white color' mean? You have a nitrite spike, as predicted, and what does 'nitrate-pinkey white color' mean? You seem to have a very bad test kit. Sounds like test strips to me. If it can't tell the difference etween pH or 7 or 8.5, bin it.

Aand... what level does white mean? 0? 10? 20? Doesn't sound a good test kit to me, ph 8 is (if I remember) 10 times more alkali than ph7, so you see why thats a rubbish kit.

that isnt even one maybe it is rubbish

hey what fish then can defo NOT go with bettas

Well your tank is cyling as you have a high nitrite reading, are the fish ok not gasping at the top of the tank.

All these posts and no one really helping. Nitrite at that level is lethal. Do water changes to bring it under 1 and a white reading does mean 0 for ammonia. Do the tests again and choose the number closest to the colour.
Your tank is nearly cycled, but the betta doesnt really get on with other fish. It would be better to take him out and buy a smaller tank just for himself and then you can start to stock your tank once it has finished cycling.
How many gallons is your tank.

And yes i have read the other post and ive completely forgotten the size of the tank.

Right let's try to get the situation of this tank established.

It is, we think, a 12 gallon tank (correct us if we're wrong phillip).

It contains 2 danios and 2 platys. Possibly also a betta (I thought you'd taken that out? let us know). Anything else? Did I see 2 guppies mentioned in one post?

It is going through the cycle and has now reached the nitrite stage.

At this stage the essential thing is to keep the ammonia and nitrites as low as you can through frequent water changes with dechlorinated water. Probably as often as once a day.

The most essential thing is NOT to buy any more fish until the cycle is finished. This means at least another month. You need to concentrate on keeping the ones you have alive.

You need a liquid test kit; there seem to be rpoblems with the one you have.

I am sorry if much of the posting has been taken up with discussions of forum etiquette. We do want to help, honestly. But you can help us, phillip, by writing as legibly as possible (not texting, makes it harder to read), and keeping all information in one thread.

ok right i have
2 guppys
2 platys
and 1 betta
it is 2 foot long by 1 foot and 1 foot high

if i get one for the betta like a bowl how will a heater fit in there?

Simple, dont buy a bowl. You should be able to get something square that a heater will fit into.

By your measurements you have a 15 US gal or 12 UK gal tank. When you are finished cycling you can fit about 15" of fish in your tank.

They sell some small Betta bowls, usually between 2.5 - 5 gal, with a heater fairly cheap. If your home stays at a fairly consistent temperature you may not actually need a heater for the Betta. I would advise you to check in the Betta section for more info.

Right now your tank is still cycling. You should be doing small daily water changes to keep the nitrite level as low as possible, preferably 0. Basically, after you maintain 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and have a nitrate reading for a couple of days your tank will be cycled. This is when you can add more fish. You will need to add the fish slowly, say 1-2 fish a week until you reach 15". You currently have 8" of fish, not including the Betta.

Hope that helps!

no not includimng the betta i have 4 fish
2 platys
2 guppys

so a few days and itl be cycled

YES

so what fish should i just not get to go with the betta
