i have an 89 litre tank i have a pleco, 2 albino rainbow sharks, 2 dwarf gouramis ,3 glass ghost catfish and a parrot cichlid , are these all compatible they seem ok atm but want to no more

Hi welcome to the forum,

Hoping this is a wind up. But here is some info on your fish

Pleco = http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=88 - size upto 13 inches but could be an other species that grows to 24 inches - hard to know if no photo. Either way in need of huge tanks lets say 5 foot as an absolute minimum.

Rainbow Sharks = http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/epalzeorhynchos-frenatum/ - 6 inch chunky fish - should only be kept one per tank due to the fact they are really intollerant of each other and should only be kept in 4 foot + tanks

Dwarf Gourami - not a bad fish for the tank :) Hopefully you have a male and a female - males have longer dorsal fins - heres some good info for you - http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/trichogaster-lalius/

Glass Catfish - http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/kryptopterus-minor/ ideally you want a 3 foot tank for them as a minimum. And they need to be in larger groups.

Parrot Cichlid - again a big fish - capeable of a chunky 8 inches. They are a hybrid of a few cichlids with the main genes coming from the Midas cichlid - so have a read here to get a vauge idea of whats in store with this one. But Parrots are a little more laid back than Midas. http://www.seriouslyfish.com/species/amphilophus-citrinellus/ <--- read the reproduction section on there for some good info on your parrot.

So yeah... unfortunately not a good situation - you have some very very large fish in there and some just plain unsuitable.

You need to start researching your fish before you buy - I have given you links there to two of the best sites IMO on the net for fish - planetcatfish and seriously fish - both have amazing profiles on all fish, suggested tank sizes, adult sizes and ideas on what to mix with them. Learning before you buy is the best thing to do - better yet if you have a smart phone search take it to the store and search for info there and then.

I think you need to make a decision as to if you want to get a much bigger tank or rehome them and start again. Have a think about it.

Sorry if it seems harsh, we have all been in this situation at one point or an other. It is fixable :)

well that proves how much fish shops actually no and will tell you . each fish brought i asked about first said tank size etc and got told yeah they'll be fine . was planning on getting rid of sharks anyway but once again fish shop said they'll be fine ( " ive got two there fine " ). gouramis, from website you gave me link to, i have to males as they are displaying territorial ritual thing. pleco is fine, do they just grow and grow or grow to the size of the environment ? the parrot cichlid isnt like the picture shown on link it is a vibrant pink without a lump on its head. the glass ghost catfish only grow upto 4 inches, and i only plan on having 5 max .

Ah right okay, yeah store workers are not always the best to get advice from... But youve learned and its good your in the right frame of mind :)

The link I gave in the parrot cichlid was to what one of its parents likely was as they are a hybrid fish. If its pink, there is a chance it has been dyed - which is really cruel and I would suggest you change your fish retailer as stores that support it deserve to go under IMO.

Bit of info for you on that here - http://www.deathbydyeing.org/moreau.htm

Plecs, they do just grow and grow. Can you describe the patterning on yours is it like the one in the link or is it a darker colour with gold flecks through it?

What are your plans now to try and remedy some of this?

it is a sailfin pleco from looking at it and pics on google . the fish store i go to has a few branches 'koi joy' ? i did read about the parrot cichlid being died and tattooed !!! didnt find this out till got home after buying it, well i really want a plec but cannot afford to be payin out for that kind of tank size. i will be taking the sharks back tommorow morning along with the cichlid if that is the case . shame because it seems really dosile is eating and not bothering any other fish. i wan t a colourful tank hence the gourami , cichlid and sharks , i like neon tetras only problem they are very small

If you like neons, the nice thing about them is they are meant to be in groups. I almost don't think of these types of fish as individuals, more as a part of a whole, and when in a group, they are lovely and seem like a big feature in your tank. I don't know how many you could get though. That would depend on what you are keeping and what else you are getting.

Small Fish = Smaller Tank
Big Fish = Big Tank.

And small fish can be just as beautiful! and with 89 liters (lets call it 90) you do have a good sized tank. And there are plenty of incredible fish that can work in there :)

I dont know that store where abouts are you from? Maybe someone can point you in the direction of some good stores.

So lets keep the Dwarf Gourami and perhaps pass on the rest - either to the store or the classifieds section of this site is pretty good :) And might help you find a better home for them that way.

I would perhaps do

2 Dwarf Gourami (you might be okay with 2 males)
8 Chilli Rasbora
8 Zebra Loaches
2 Pitbull Plecos.

Im more than sure you can source those fish - the hardest ones would be the pitbul plecos but we will be able to find you some somewhere :)

The problem is the size that the parrot will get to as wills explained, not so much that its attacking the other fish or not. Your tanks just not big enough for 1.

Looking at the fish you have I'd say the only ones that will live in the tank comfortable are the dwarf gourami but 2 males don't usually work out but that's not saying they definitely won't work, they may or may not... As you said, they are displaying territorial behaviour. It's a shame you didn't have a male and a female as wills said. They would be very good for your tank :)

I also agree that any shop that sells or approves of dyed fish should not be allowed to stay open. It's very cruel to the fish and so it doesn't say a lot for the store. The more people that know about places like this the better as hopefully they will stop buying from them. Fish stores in general (most of) are notorious for giving people false and/or misleading information and will sell you any fish regardless to whether your tank is big enough and/or if the fish in question is in fact compatible with the fish you may already have.

The best thing for you to do in future would be to do your own research online or ask about any fish/equipment/general fish keeping on here 1st and then go from there. That way you will be given the correct information straight off and won't have any problems later down the line. It also saves you the hassle in having to take back any fish you have been wrongly sold :good:

im from suffolk , east anglia theres a pets at home but the fish in there are always under treatment, plain and colourless . i plan on keeping the gouramis and the ghost cats, like the chilli rasbora but several aquatic centres within 20 mile radius dont sell them , both gouramis are male but been told to put a seperation net up to try and sort the dominant one chasing the other (last few days) . if not ill get rid of the aggressor. worse comes to worse ill take them all back and paint some fish on the tank :)
