Help!

Hi, i have a 27 Gallon tank, at the moment i have 5 mixed platies, 2 black mollies, 4 red eye tetra, and a 4-5'' common plec. In the past i have been losing jusrt the platies as they are the smalest, and been buying more only to find them die again sad.gif. And i am sick of it and feel very sorry for them. Is this the plec which is kiling them? Or the other fish?

And the tank was cycled beforehand yes, and my water parasm are fine Ammo 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 20 and ph is 7.2 ish.

Or is my tank too small fior these fish?

When you say it was cycled describe please how you cycled it. And are you testing with strips or liquid kits.

The plec will get 2 big anyway and needs to be rehomed

27 Gal is not too small for the fish that you have. (Bar the plec if its a comon and not bristlenose)

After how long from when you intdroduce the platties to your tank are they diying?

what way do you introduce them to the tank ?

do they all die in 1 mass loss or bit by bit ?

if you have been replacing them very often are you getting them from the same lfs ?? if so there is also a chance that they have a very week strain or sick batch of fish come through.

Hi, thanks for the replies. The bought a fluval 3+ which was already cycled and had colonised bacteria on it, so i added water and dechlorinator. Then the next morning i bought the tetra first, i used the drip method to acclimitize them. Then the next day i bought the rest of the fish and i was advised by the lfs not too drip them and just let them float in the bag for 15-20 mins, before putting them in.

The platies die every few days, one by one, sometimes there will be 2 dead when i wake up though, and they are all discoloured, and i always catch the plec sucking the dead bodies. And some of the dead ones float and some sink

I do get all my fish from the same lfs, the guy said that the ph out of his tank in the lfs was 7.6, and mine is 7.2

Im aware that the plec will get huge and i am going to give it back to the shop tommorow morning.

Im just completely stumped, have i done something wrong that i am over looking?

Not to be harsh but why slowly introduce the tetra to your ph and not the platies, they should have been treated the same way to avoid ph shock.

As for the filter having been cycled what do you mean, was it running for sometime in an existing tank (one that had been up and going with fish for a few months) ?

Do you have a test kit so you can tell us what your ammonia and nitrIte is?

I know, i was advised by the lfs that it wasnt neccessary to drip them as they said the ph wasnt that much different to mine. I use liquid master test kit to test my params. The filter i used was taken of a friends tank which was fully cycled and has been running for sometime.

I guess i was just too eager to get the fish in, that and i have been taking bad advice from the lfs. The tank isnt a new setup though, i have had it running for nearly 3 months.

Just been looking at the fish and the black and orange plattie is chasing the 2 smaller sunset ones. It isnt that much bigger than them though.
