Hello,

Seeing if anyone has had success with treating Mollies for worms. I’m not sure what type of worms I’m dealing with, but I have a newer black Molly with white stringy poop. This is the 2nd black Molly I’ve had, first I treated for worms too, but I don’t know if it was successful because he later died from dropsy. If anyone could share successful dosage and water change info for treating my Mollies I’d appreciate it. I do have another large thriving Molly in the tank I don’t want to harm, unfortunately don’t have a separate hospital tank.

Mollies and other common livebearers sold in shops are usually infested with thread/ round worms like Camallanus and Capillaria. Flubendazole or Levamisole will treat thread worms.

Praziquantel treats tapeworm. The fish might have tapeworm as well as thread, or it might have thread, or it might have tape. Generally it is thread worms that are the most common in these types of fish.

The medication "Flubendazole" will treat thread and tape worms, whereas Levamisole only treats thread worms. And Praziquantel only treats tapeworms.

Section 3 of the following link tells you how to treat intestinal worms in fish.

It's hard to diagnose worms by eye, and that makes choosing the right med (if you can even find the right med!) difficult. I use prazi-pro for wild caught fish as they have very simple tapeworms - easy to treat.
Farmed fish can have terrible infestations, and the meds Colin talks about (all unavailable without a vet in my country) are effective. Nematodes like Camallanus do a lot of damage and require more than prazi, as excellent as prazi is.

The fact your molly died with dropsy suggest it was a bacterial infection that caused the stringy wastes, and that the bacteria made it to the kidneys and killed the unlucky fish. Not all stringy white waste is from worms.

How to treat that depends on your local regulations combined with luck. Is it a gram negative or gram positive bacteria - what antibiotics work and what don't... lots of questions and no answers.

Thank you for all of the information! How long do I keep carbon removed when using levamisole? Is it just for 24 hours or after all treatments?
