Morning All, just giving the tank a really deep clean and was hoping to re jig the tank stand to try and make the space a little more use able.

The stand is currently like this

Not the best photo but the best I have on me. Typical stand really two cupboards either end and shelving in the middle.

Would it effect the stand if I made one large cupboard at one end then shelving at the other, something like my crude drawing below;

As long as the tank is supported properly there's no issue.

At the moment it's supported by two uprights, splitting the space underneath in three sections. If you want one big cabinet and shelves then you will only have one upright down the middle, thus splitting it into two sections. This will need to be stronger than the original two uprights but can be done. The only other issue is to make sure the top of the stand will not bow due to the lack of one upright, if it does the top 'slab' will need to be replaced with a stronger piece.

Would splitting the large cupboard in two help with this ? I was just a case of creating 1 large cupboard and a shelf long enough to take an 18" tank

i'd split the cupboard into two, or use metal as a frame. Im going to be doing similar myself using 1inch thick MDF which should support my 65 gallon tank

Splitting the cupboard in two would make no structural difference to the overall support of the tank as it would just mean that one side of the tank is supported 1/4 of the way along as well as the main support at the 1/2 way point. All it would do is reduce access in the cupboard.

Support the tank at the 1/2 way point with min. 2"x2" and replace the chipboard top of the cupboard with either solid wood or thick MDF and it will be fine. I had a 4'x2'x2' sat on a custom stand made of 3"x2" with no middle support and it was fine due to the sturdy top sheet (thick marine ply)
