Hi guys. I had a 10 gallon tank last time for my halfmoon betta. Unfortunately it was too cold because it was during winter. I dind't have a heater or lights or anything, it was just planted. This time i bought a 1 gallon tank with lights and a pump. My halfmoon betta is active in it. I have 5 ghost shrimp with my betta. I was planning on getting this 5 gallon tank tomorrow http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Aquarium-Starter-Kit-5-Gallons-Fish-Aquatic-Pets/12177653 I am not using the 10 gallon tank anymore. My dad is moving his crabs and lobster over there because they keep eating his fish. It's pretty hot now so i don't think i need a heater. I will definitely get a heater when winter comes. I just wanted to know if the 5 gallon tank would be good. What can i put in a 5 gallon tank? Do you think i can put 2 khuli loaches in there with my betta fish? Would this work: 1 betta, 2 khuli loaches, and a snail? I need help with my bettas tank mate.

A 5gallon will be big enough for just your betta and the shrimp khuli loaches need groups of 6+ and a minimum of 35litres with a large foot print for ground room.

Bettas like their tanks WARM so make sure the temp is warm around 26 celiuse or roughly 72? f (someone correct me if i'm wrong) i highly reccomend you buy heater anyway.

The 5gal is perfect for a betta and some shrimp, but i'd still get a heater. Bettas like it warmer than most other tropical fish and do well IME at 80ish... even if your house is warm it won't stay warm during the night and the temp drop would, I imagine, be quite drastic. A sudden temp change like this will stress your fish out and may cause illness

I acctualy have that tank and my Betta likes it a lot. The Kuli Loachs are schooling fish and they grow to 4in so I wouldn't suggest it. I was looking into those to befor I got the tank but I think they would be happier in someone else tank because mines has gravel... Anyways, I would suggest White Cloud Mountain Minnows to go with the betta fish. I had 2 but one died today becuase it got stuck in the filter intake. Its strange because the filter is weak (I set to weak for the betta). At first the betta went after them (not flaring) and then I have seen it flare at them twice but only when I get close to the tank (maybe a food thing). But it has never tried to nipe at them. So I would just say if you get White Clouds to get 4-5 for the 5gallon tank, just so they feel safer. I hear snails and shrimps are good to although if the shrimp is to small they betta may try to eat it. And have you tried Green Cabomba plants for your betta tank? Because mines likes to play in it more than the Java fern and the Cabomba grows super fast (I can tell it grew from this morning).

oh. So if i bought a 5 gallon, i would only be able to keep my betta with the shrimps? Can i have a snail or african dwarf frog?

You can have other fish but snails and shrimp are the most suggested ones. Another fish I heard of being with a betta is a Otocinclus. Im starting to think that fish that stay more at the bottom have better luck in a tank with a betta than a top swimming fish because be betta won't feel that its in its territory.

Yeah you could have a snail (be aware that they poop alot :) ) and the dwarf frogs are great fun to keep, but you'll have to feed them by hand/tweezers as they are very slow and the betta will want his food (as ADF's eat bloodworms).

oh okay. I'll add a snail. How many frogs can i have if i take out my 5 ghost shrimp and leave 1 snail?

loaches and snails together wont work as loaches eat snails. just a snail will be great, no need for anything else. and why cant you use the 10 g tank? is it broke? if not, put it in there with pump, heater sponge filter....would be brill....if not ok....5g is ok, but only a snail, as the snail is 2inches fully griwn and betta may get to 3 inches, so thats a full complement xx hope that helps

My dad is using the 10g for his crustaceans. Plus the 10g won't fit on my desk. The 5g will fit very nicely. So i added water i got from the rain and added water conditioner last night. I only have one plant in the 5g. Is it safe to put my betta in it yet?

Sorry for posting again, but i wanted to know how to weaken the filter. My betta is happy in the new tank =). It is exploring and going under or over the plants. When i had the filter in it would get sucked near the surface of the water or the filter. It looked like it was fighting against the current. I was scared it would be stressed, so i turned off the filter.

Is the tank cycled? Either way, you MUST have the filter on. Try pointing the outlet at the side of the tank
