Hi,

I have a 330 litre, 4 foot tank. I have a 300w heater in the tank behind a 3D background. My filter pipes are also all behind the background - so it looks really nice.

BUT...the problem is, I've set the heater to 27 degrees, but the thermometer in my tank is barely scruding 20 degrees. I thought the heater would warm up the water behind the background and then that warm water would go through the filter and then back up and into the tank, in front of the filter.

The website I bought the background from states that you can put heaters behind them but I don't think my Mbuna can be happy in 20 degree water.

Has anyone dealt with anything similar? I really want to keep my heater behind the background and was my main reason for spending a bomb on it in the first place.

As always, any advice would be really appreciated.

How about a bigger heater or 2 heaters if you must keep them hidden?

How long's the tank been setup too?

external heaters are very good, if you have an external filter

Hi
Heaters need constant flow around them to run at their optimum level.
Its a bad idea to hide them where there is no decent flow.
Get a Hydor in line heater or purchase a external filter that has a heater incorporated inside the filter....if you have the cash that is

Hi everyone. Thanks for the advice. I didn't even know you could get external filters with heater built in

The tank has only been set up about 5 weeks but I'm using filter media from a small established tank.

The only externals I've seen are made by Hydor and they plug right into the outtake pipe so your water is heated going directly into the tank. I dont know of other companies but they aren't cheap either. A 300w Jager TruTemp here is $35, while a 300w Hydor is $90. Both are german manufactured as well
