hi im new to the forum. i have a 25 gallon tank with 6 tiger barbs 2 sumo loach and now 2 dwarf gourami. i only just brought the gourami and was told that they would be fine with the barbs as long as there was 6 or more barbs. how ever the barbs seem to be picking on the gourami. will this die down or will they just keep hounding them. any help would be much appreciated.

barbs in my oppinion will go for anything that moves, mine picked on applesnails over 1.5" a 10" goldfish (was only temporary) and 6" pleco.

Personally i would only keep them in a species only tank

mine where in a pack of 10

Oh and welcome to the forum

I had tiger barbs in my 6ft tank years ago, never again, they were the nippiest things going and attacked everything.

sell 4 and keep 2 then its even

That would make the problem worse please don't give advice if you don't know what you are talking about.

Tiger barbs are fin nippers and the idea with keeping a group within a community setup is to keep the aggresion within the group, but in practice even in the 50gallon this did not work for me.

They are wonderful fish though males will perfom some great displays spinning around whilst nipping anothers mouth sort of a locked on fight. never had any injuries though.

yes they need a species only tank in my opinion.

If you can, return the Gourami's.

The seller should abide by the consumer rights rules and give you a "cool off" period. Plus if you take them back and explain that the advice you were given was wrong - maybe they wont dish out the same advice again.

If you have to keep them, maybe you could divide up the tank?
