Help Urgent In My View

Did you actually cycle the filter? I can't find mention of that above..

For the moment, your best bet is to do water changes to keep ammonia and nitrite well below 0.25 ppm. If your filter is actually cycled and just had a mini-crash because of the chlorinated water, then in a few days your problems should be solved. On the other hand, if it crashed completely or was never cycled, it will take weeks for the problems to resolve.

Can you get any media (sponges, ceramic noodles, whatever) from a set-up which is completely cycled?

Hi yes filter was cycled the set up has been running finr for about 8 months and untill all this i had only lost 2 fish i did another 25% change last night will do test shortly and change again if needed

Then yes, it does just sound like a filter crash due to chlorine (which dissipates after a day) or chloramine (which take a week to go from the water).

Hi all i now have some better readings
Ammonia 0 ppm
niterite 0 ppm
PH 6.4
niterate 40ppm how do i lower this
cheers

Those readings look much better now. Nitrate is normally reduced with water changes (check your tap nitrate, it could be high) and if you keep plants, they will use it up too. Do dechlorinate all water intended for the tank from now on!

No more deaths now?

Also your stocking is quite bad.. the fish would benefit from some changes to it, if you want to hear my suggestions.

  • 2 blue gourami - Trichogaster trichopterus? These are on the large side for the tank and if you have more than one, it is possible that they may fight to death once they are mature. Or are they Colisa lalia? In that case ok, but if you have two males, also likely to fight.
  • 5 neon tetras was 8 - schooling, so keep 6+, also known to be fragile.
  • 1 female sword tail was 3
  • 4 guppies was 6
  • 1 red tailed black shark - generally, most shark species are known as "evil #19###s" in the hobby, for a good reason: they are very aggressive, especially with age, and will easily harass fish, such as guppies or neons, to death.
  • 1 clown loach was 2 - grow too large for your tank and are schooling
  • 2 Congo tetras was 3 - on the larger side for your tank, and are schooling
  • 3 other tetras was 4 - what species? all tetras are schooling

So if this was my tank, I would try to get the stocking to be the following:
  • 1 Trichogaster trichopterus or 1m 2f Colisa lalia, depending on what yours are
  • 20 neons or 10 neons + 10 other tetra species (depending on what exactly it is)
  • 1 female swordtail
  • 4m guppies or 1m 3f guppies (depending on what yours are.. if you have fewer than 2 females per male, increase female numbers)
  • 1m 2-3f of an Apistogramma species, for example, Apisto. cacatuoides or Apisto. agassizii - you have perfect water for keeping and breeding South American fish! also will give you a "centre piece" species
  • 1 small pleco such as a bristlenose or 6 Corys (if you have sand) - as you are missing bottom fish

Then (if you have not done so already), I would add bogwood and some easy plants (or lots of plants, if you are already comfortable with plants). I'm not sure if this will give you "more colour" in the way you want.. but the fish will act in more interesting ways.

is it ok to put thesein the tank with the other fish listed also how do you sex them

i have a bristlenose only 1

Try Anubias and Java moss, almost no fish will eat the first because it's indigestible and the second because it tastes foul.

Blue tetras are quite nice.

Not really.. both of those can be bright yellow if you get a yellow morph. Sexing is done by looking at fins, patterns and body shape: dorsal fins are more pointy in males and for the rest, just look at lots of photos of males and females.

But they probably won't work in your tank unless you do the other changes I suggested as they will just be too stressed by some of the other fish you have.
