I've just taken in Athlid's cichlid which she kindly rescued. It's definitely not a male convict, or even related. In fact I don't even think it's SA. Definitely a cichlid but
1.Shape is long like a molly not round like a con
2. lots of narrow black stripes BUT
a)Tail and fins are yellow
b) has long dark dangly pectoral fins
c)has two yellow spots on anal fin

Could it be a female Malawi mouth brooder? If so can it stay temporarily in same tank as cons and jewels or would they all kill each other?

Whats the main body colour? sounds malawi(ish) could be anything I had an sp44 (thick skin or redtail) they can get pretty nasty its why I re-homed mine.

this site has a massive list if you want to sit through the pictures

sorry not much help

Body shape is Malawi type/ main boby colour is black and white like cons with more and thinner stripes. yellow dorsal fin and tail. Anal fin has 2 darker yellow spots -egg spots? plus bright turquoise dot on each gill cover
can I keep this with cons if it's a Malawi? Currently had to isolate it in a bucket with heater pending ID

Thanks for the link. Looks very similar to male Aulonocara Mamelela but not exactly. Only 2 spots on anal fin
can this be kept temporarily with cons and jewels? It's not very big, about jewel size smaller than female cons

I am afraid I cannot answer that one. I have heard convicts can live with malawi because they can fit into the water parameters but I am not sure the other way round. I am afraid I dont really know of anyone who keeps malawi that I could ask.

Sounds to me like a Labidochromis Perlmutt

I tried keeping a few cons and a JD with Mbuna before, they didnt last long (killed over night)

Similar but not quite. Mine has 2 egg spots on anal fin and long dark dangly pectoral fins almost like a gouranmi.

Who killed who? Did the convicts kill the Malawi or did Mbuna kill the convicts?
Water aparmeters are not a problem as this fish lived in the same London water I have which is around pH7,5

Anything i put with the Mbuna was killed (by the Mbuna)

pseudotropheus Demasoni or melonachromis Auratus are probably the toughest/nastiest Cichlids there is p4p

Well the 25W heater wasn;t enugh to keep bucket warm so I had to put him in the cichlid tank. Fingers crossed!
He's a brave little fish, fearlessly standing up to 3 jewels at once who are all bigger than him. Then he dropped in to see the girl cons, not worried they're twice his size. Those Malawis are tough alright!Just hope my cichlids will be OK
