Help guys!

I noticed my CO2 counter said I did not have enough CO2 in tank, so re set canister with teaspoon yeast plus sugar and water, left it to start up. Popped out for couple of hours, just got back and can hardly see through water!!

Taken CO2 out and increased aeration in tank. Do I need to do anything else?

Fish appear ok, Phantoms still displaying etc.

Advice please!!

that should be enough. we had an accident with pressuired CO2 a while back, something (i blame the cats) knocked the regulator on the bottle and it sent loads of CO2 streaming into the tank. killed a couple of fish.

just getting the Co2 off and oxygen going back into the water is all you need.

curious why you can't see through the water though, we didn't have this water was still clear...... :/

Hi, think water is cloudy because I use yeast mixture, and some must have got into tank.

In that case do you think I need to do a water change or will it settle on the bottom of tank. My day to do clean and water change is tomorrow, shall I bring it forward a day?

Thanks,

yes if the yeast got into the tank do a large (80%) water change immediatley.

Just starting now,

please keep fingers crossed for fish.

Is yeast toxic for them?

not sure but if you get anything like that in the tank you want it out asap.

if you read the pinned topic in the planted tanks forum about DIY CO2 you'll see several people have had the same experience, advice is always lots of water changes, someone has reported fatalities but not in every case.

i have done the same thing so many times its not funny, the next time you set it up, run it in a bucket for a few hours first ,so then if the mix leaks it want leave you having to do a massive WC..

add only half- t-spoon yeast, then up to first line with white sugar, and fill up the cannister to just under the top line with tepid water, works a treat for me
good luck

cant comment on fatalities as i was always advise the same as miss wiggle has told you,to do a massive water change.

Just waiting for second half of water to heat up, will do another large change tomorrow too.

Off toread pinned topic,

thanks so much for swift reply,

Jackie

Shelagh, changed to sand over last weekend, took us 4 hours, looks much better, IMO now.
Just added too much yeast this time.

This happened to me twice, my I needed a neeled regulator, first time the gas canister dumped all the CO2 in my tank, killed all my fish. I was highly upset. When I resetup the tank. It happened again, the fish were all lobsided and didn't look too well, I did a 50% water change and then an hour later they started to look normal. Swimming around and all. So just do a large water change. It should help. I got a needle valve installed and it's been 6 months and no deaths. So if things still look cloudy do a large water change, that should give them more oxygen and start over.
Good Luck

Hi, thanks for all your suggestions and shared experiences. I've done a 80% water change yesterday, water looks fine now. Added more aeration just to be on the safe side.

It was my fault, I added too much yeast :/

Everyone looks fine, thank god :good:

Will add the new CO2 canister tomorrow when I'm in all day to keep an eye on things

so glad you got it sorted, its easily done, after all a teeny weeny bit more wont hurt will it??(its surprising just how much it does hurt,ey?) im glad you did the substrate change over too, now you will have to start taking pictures and posting them for all to see :)

keep your eye on the tank and the tube at the top of the cannister,so you can see the mix going thru from there ( but i hope it dosent for you, as you sound like you have done enough water changes for one week lol)

good luck, let us know how you get on
