Help?! (spawnlog)

yeh let them take their time. some males are greate nest builders, others are not. i currently have my HM male and a pk female together and he has not yet made any serious attempt to build a nest but he is normaly a great nest builder, i guess hes just a tad distracted at the moment.

my pair of blacks just spawned today, they have been together, on and off, for over a week before they spawned.

my first pair spawned within 48 hours of first being introduced, its all dependant on the tempraments of the indavidual fish, and how well they have been conditioned and how good their set up is. having said that, i recently seen on youtube, a pair spawning in a bowl that was perhaps only 2 gallons, the males nest covered the whole surface of the bowl, lol, so just shows if they are comfortable, they will spawn!

Cool, thanks for advice!

If it did take a week, would the female have to stay in the chimney for the whole week in order to make the spawn a success?

once they seem ready, then as long as the female is not getting too badly beaten, she can be left with the male until she spawns

I woke up to a nest of bubbles! I'm so happy right now.

I think the male is still building, so how do I know when to let the female out?

Make sure the nest is thick enough to hold the eggs and tightly packed, make sure the female is still barred up and podgy showing her oviposter then give it a go.

the nest doesnt have to be thick to hold the egss, a single bubble can hold up to 4 eggs, you'll suprprised where some males will actually put the eggs, ive had males that use riccia with no bubbles at all, some build a small nest and a day later ive thought all have been eaten and then find the fry free swimming a few days later at the back of the tank.
my tip for the day is, even though you may think the eggs or fry have been eaten leave it for a few days and you may well find the little sod had just hidden them away from sight as he felt a little threatened by people looking in the tank constantly and that some fry will be there in the end. this happens to me more than anything, i dont think my males like me  so i really dont bother with them, i just record the spawn and when i take the female out and just leave him for the 3 days to do his business.

Dont be dissapointed if on the first spawning they both eat the eggs if this is their first time. They are learning what to do. I was gutted, but its natural apparantly. Good luck with it though :good:

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement! Thanks to modaz and blue_betta also for the help.

The nest has got a little bit bigger and covers the whole area under the floating cup now. I think I'll let the female out in an hour after I have given them both a good meal to see what happens.

Okay I just put the female in for about half an hour and the male was following her (not in an aggressive way though). She just kept darting into the plants but did stay still for a few second a couple of times.

I took her out after about fourty minutes.

Help...?

Why did you take her out? My female's been in since 9 o'clock this morning

is she stripey? like vertical stripes, tiger stripes?

if you fed them a big meal, give them a few hours to digest it first, they wont do much on a full stomach. i feed them about 5-6 bloddowrms each, about 6-8 hours before spawning.

Oh... no! I thought he might kill her or something. I'll put her back in!

Will do. The bubble nest has got smaller now though. When will I know if they have spawned so I can take her out again?
