Okay, so about half an hour ago I put my female in a glass chimney in my male's tank. They both started going crazy and the male started flaring too. The female has calmed down now but the male is still flaring and circling the chimney.

There are no signs of him buiding a buble nest yet. Is this normal?

Other advice would be appreciated. Wish me luck!

i've not bred bettas but it doesn't sound even to me like you've read up much before starting this.....hopefully one of our resident breeders will be able to advise you soon!

Why doesn't it sound like I've read up? I would never launch into something that I know nothing about...

Thanks anyway.

well from my knowledge flaring and things is very normal, bettas do not just breed overnight they need conditioning first beforehand......that's all....I think some more help is needed for you so that you understand each step.....from what i have learnt so far i'd say nothing is going wrong with your spawn, it just doesn't all happen in one single day, let alone a few hours!

Okay thanks. The only thing I'm not clear on is when the male should start building the bubble nest.

As far as I'm away the conditioning alone takes up to a week i think, though don't hold me to that, this is where they do what yours are doing now and get used to each other.....over time the female if ready should start showing vertical bars on her body....these are breeding bars, and she will get fat with eggs......the male should be flaring and stuff, he'll be checking her out and getting used to her.....even when the time comes to release them they may chase each other, particuarly the male chasing the female....she has to have nice places to hide....even after release it can go wrong.....though i really haven't learnt enough to say anymore really......

what colouring has your female got at the moment?

i think once she is showing signs of wanting to breed, or when he starts to want to impress her, he will build a nest

She is a dark brown colour. She has formed some vertical wavy lines now. She doesn't really appear to be bothered about the male now either.

Also, about feeding the male - I know not to feed him when the nest is built because it could trigger his appetite but what about now? I can feed him now, right?

As I said I've not yet bred bettas.....I'd change the name of the thread so people know it's spawning you need help with....maybe
PM modaz or devon_charm, mermaid mel, jaded12, blue_betta.....all these people have the knowledge to help with your spawn

continue to condition her for 2 weeks whilst he can see her, give him time some betta males are really slow but get there in the end, give it 3 days then give us an update.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I just imagined the male to start building immediately but just looked in a few other threads aswell.

I'll keep you updated.

The male has calmed down a bit more now and has started to swim around the tank more.

He sometimes goes under the foam cup and looks like he is breathing but a bubble comes out but it doesn't stay there and eventually pops.

I think he knows what he's doing though.

Okay, there's a clump of about five bubbles now under the cup and he keeps coming back under. Not much, but it's a start!

I'm so excited right now!

I don't know much, I just know patience is a virtue and it can sometimes take a few hours, sometimes a few days, sometimes it just does not happen with that pair and you start over. Good luck :good:

Im pretty sure i read by one of the more experienced breeders on here that sometimes the male build his nest after they have spawned..

Not 100% sure though..

The first male i tried would not build a nest under polystyrene cups, he would only do it under small floating leafs for some reason.. maybe yours is like that - worth a try :)
