okay, i believe that platies can be preggerz for up to about 30-32 days! once givin birth, u do need to seperate the fry from the mammy + daddy! :-

I woke up this morning and found fry in my tank yay. i managed to find 2 and put them in the breeder thing. now another question for u all wot do i feed the fry and how long do i keep them seperated??

I have 4 platies along with a few other fish in my 110litre tanks and we've basically let nature take it's course. There are loads of places for the fry to hide and feel safe, including a cave, live plants and bogwood. So far we have 2 midsized fry and 8 teeny fry all running around. They are that secure with their hiding places that the have been seen going all the way to the surface and also to the front of the tank!

It depends on what you're trying to achieve tho, if you're intent on breeding them and keeping them leave them in the breeder net. But you may find you're over run b4 long... As for food, while they are teeny tiny you can get some Liqui-Fry stuff which is food that disolves into the water and is small enough for them to eat. After that ground up flakes should be fine.

You feed them a bit of the same flake you give the adults but take a single flake between finger tips and crush it to a powder. There are lots of other foods you could use such as baby brine shrimp or micro worms but the flake is something you probably have on hand. You keep them separated from the parents for about 3 or 4 weeks if they grow at a reasonable rate. If you have anything besides platies in the tank, it may be longer than that before they are big enough to survive in the main tank. By the way, you have at least 4 or 5 fry in that tank. Have a look along the corner formed by the gravel and the sides of the tank and you will probably find more of them. I have seen platy fry hide between 2 of the bits of gravel in the substrate.

thanks. i took the plants out and i took the decoration out and only found 2, but when i tried to catch them they went under the gravel because i have the shunky gravel not the fine stuff i looked as much as i could but the other fish ( zebra danios and pearl danios ) kept getting in the way. should i put a small piece of plant in the breeder trap with them?
