Hi my external filter has had a little bit broke off the top of it so it leaks what can i use to fill it or stop it from leaking?

Eek, for the mean time put the canister in a bucket so it doesn't get your floor wet.

Do you have another filter(s) that you can run while you fix the external? The only answer I can think of is to fill the break with aquarium sealant, but obviously the external needs to be turned off and dried before you do this and the sealant takes a while to cure.

Can you post a pic? PTFE tape can be used for medium chunks, or as a real botch, gaffa (duck) tap will work if you dry the area before applying it. PTFE is plummers tape and thus waterproof entirly... Vasteline is also an option.

You need to get the bust part replaced ASAP, as these are all temperary and could fail. Raise the inlet stem as high as possible so that if the fix does fail, you get as little water on the floor as possibls :good:

A pic will give a better idea as to what we are dealing with

All the best

as you can see its on the rim of the top of the filter, what would be best to do?

If you have it, Gaffa tape over the gap, tightly from the inside to make a makeshift "lip" onto which the main o-ring can make a seal. If this doesn't work, throw all the filter media, in it's baskets, into the tank and stick an air stone under the media baskets. The raising bubbles of air will push oxygenated water with ammonia in, over the filter bacteria, thus hopefully keeping them alive untill the filter can be replaced. This bucket section, can be replaced seporately, but may take too long to get in stock... :/

Have you acctualy tried running this. I would try it in a bucket to contain any leaks, and be ready on the isolation taps, to shut off flow if it starts to leak badly. It may just be cosmetic, though I doubt it  After botching a pepair, test in the same way, expect it to leak as this is a realy hard part to fix even temperrerilly (spelling).

That is a realy unlucky place to nick it, as it is hard to botch a repair round  In all honesty, I would consider it unrepairable or botchable and start proceedings to try keep the fish and filter bacteria alive. Be prepaired for a mini-cycle. If you don't have enough water conditioner handy to do a weeks worth of 50% daily waterchanges, I'd grab some more when you collect the new filter :good:

Best of luck

any idea were i can get this part for the filter?
its a sacem marathon 1500.

Best bet is to ask either where you purchased it, or a couple of LFS's. If they are still made, they will be able to specialist order a spare part for you. They may ask that you pay them in full first, as this isn't a make I've ever heared of, making my suspect that parts may be hard to get, expencive and hard to sell to someone else, or all three, making the LFS probibly reluctant to order one without a deposit at least.

IMO your best bet at this stage, unless you have a spare filter, is to replace the unit. Waiting a week for the new part is likely going to crash the tank, or at least put you into a situation where you have to do a full on fish-in cycle. If you can get a replacement part, keep this filter as a spare or sell it on if your short on cash.

If on a budget, Tetratec are the best bet. What size tank is it?

If you have money to burn (not literaly obviously :P ) then Eheim are the most recomended on here. The Pro2 range are the sweet spot, with Pro3's unproven and the earlier models somewhat lacking features. Avoid any thermofilter from any brand. They all have more bugs in them than a mature garden wildlife pond...
