Help Please - Tank Loud Cant Sleep!

Germs...

You obivously have more knowledge of fish than I do. However after accidental dog breeding for the past 6 weeks I have had nothing but bark bark bark. And I didn't make any bother at all. I set up a fish tank and the filter is a bit to loud and it is vibrating against the desktop. Obivously this is doing me no favours as the constant vibration and the bubble sounds coming from the air pump are causing. I asked if you were pathetic and I did NOT say you were. I appreciate you helping other people, however I'm 16. Got college in the morning, and I come on here to seek some help from people asking advice on what to do. And other people have been quite helpful. Whereas you just thought it was a joke and couldn't resist to make a comment. I've turn't the filter off and in the week I'm going to purchase a bigger tank with a silent filter and work from there. Thank you for helping other people but unhelpful comments are less appreciated.

And I am bound to be a little stressed due to the constant noise.

Thank you, yours truley Rickyy

I know what you mean... I'm got four kitties and an angry momma cat and they're stressing me out, also the fact I'm worried my tanks are going to collapse at any second because the stand is bottomless.

Aww Id sort that out straight away. If the fish tank collpases its oing to be hard work rebulding your aqurium.

Good like with your cats/kittens :D

Lol but I can't... I'm already 200$ in debt to my parents and they don't seem to think anything is going to happen. Ah well their luck, but they're paying for the aquarium plus double for "emotional turmoil."

Suspend the air pump from the inside of the stand with a piece of string. The vibrations from the pump are made louder by resting on the stand, the same as if you take a tuning fork, smack it, then place it on a table.

If you get a valve to adjust the air pressure you can turn down the air flow, making the bubbling sound quieter. For now tie a loose knot in the air feed line.

With any air pump it's better to bleed off some air than to turn down the output with no place for the air to go, but for a day or two reducing it with a knot won't cause any long term damage.

I suggest buying a Whisper filter that is kept inside the tank. I have one and it's very quiet. I can see how you can't sleep, though. I can't sleep with noise either. But I sleep fine with the Whisper filter.

I also suggest you have your female dog spayed, so you don't have anymore accidental litters. There are way too many puppies in shelters that don't have any homes. There are low-cost options if money is a problem.

Don't worry about that. I bought one that is just a wrought iron stand with no bottom almost 3 years ago for my 29 gallon and it is still doing fine.

Ah... it's mainly my acrylic one I'm worried about, all the other ones are glass.

Actually, I thought acrylic was generally stronger than glass but I'm not sure.

Definitely go with a different kind of filter. Reverse UGF's are good filters, but standard UGF's can be a real pain, and require you to pay serious attention while gravel vaccing to avoid it clogging up.

Most HOB filters are now very quiet, and if you keep the water level up to the release area it'll be even more so...do make sure to leave at least half an inch between the cover and the water surface however to have proper gas exchange. The second advantage of HOB filters is that you won't need the air pumps because the surface agitation from the falling water from the HoB serves the same purpose as the air pumps. FYI...most of the extra oxygen in the water from air pumps comes not from the bubbles themselves, but the surface agitation caused by them.

I think some canister filters are very quiet as well, but I do not own one so I can't say.

Actually, the canisters I have (Fluval 304s) are dead quiet. Even standing right next to the tank you can't hear them running.

I had a similar problem many years ago with my first tank. It had an under gravel filter and I placed the air pump on the shelf next to it. It vibrated and rattled and drove me mad (it was in my bedroom too). I ended up putting a small peice of old off-cut carpet underneath the pump and put it back on the shelf. I used some little plastic clips to slightly restrict the airflow on the airline tubes and it worked a treat. The carpet stopped all the vibrations and the airflow to the under gravel filter was slower but still enough to be effective. Nice and quiet and the tank remained very healthy for many many years.

Good luck.

also if its the sound of the bubbles breaking against the water surface, try some different stones, i have one that is pretty loud as its a very small stone and i have it positioned under a piece of wood which results in large bubbles which make a large pop as they break against the surface, i also have a long curtain of bubbles, i've not re-buried the pipe atm, so its on top of the gravel, which gives a nice soft curtain of tiny bubbles that make no sound at all as they reach the top of the tank, try that :)

don't give up, once u've got the noise sorted i'm sure u'll enjoy it :)
