My betta has been moved into his own tank now due to an ill advised purchase of some guppies but since moving him he's managed to tear his fin and also the fin has gone very pale or white in places. He's a blue veil tail with some white/pearl colouration on him. He's always had pale patches on his fin but it seems to be going all pale. He's not got any signs of whitespot so that doesn't explain the whiteness to the fin.
I don't know if he's done it to himself or not so i've put a mirror next to the tank for him to flare at. He looks at it but doesn't seem aggressive towards it. What do people suggest I do to help? I'm having to do an fish in cycle due to the hastiness of having to rehouse him. He's in a 60L with 3 live plants and some decorations that allow him to hide.

It's been a very stressful few days with my fish and i really don't know what to do at the moment

Ok i am thinking he's got fin rot cos there are large patches of brown on his lower fin as well as the tear and the colour loss. Any suggestions? I've got some melafix but have heard it's not safe with bettas

Maracyn 1 works pretty well. I used it for a little while, but it only really works if the fin rot is mild. :good:

Here is what it looks like:

Just remember to follow all the instructions on the package! ^^;

Do you, by any chance, have any pictures of before and/or after the little guy got the fin rot? ^^;

Oh, and, btw; I have gotta get off nows, so I'm pretty sure that one of the older (I'm 13, LOL :p ), more experienced members should be along in just a bit! Good luck! :D

i wouldnt treat for anything...just keep changing his water to keep it really clean...iread your other post about the high ammonia in the tank you took him out of..may have caused injury form high ammonia coupled with him ripping his tail which makes it look worse than it is...
for now, test his water along with the other tank. water change if ammonia is more than .25. feed him a few pellets (3-4)or flakes every OTHER day (more food in=more wate/ammonia out) so less waterchanges will be necessary. remove any uneaten food with a turkey baster or net.
clean water is usually (90% of the time) the BEST remedy fo fin rot. keep him clean and feed sparingly for a week. see if you notice regrowth (clearish bits at the margin of the injury/fin)...if you notice degredation or rapid erosion of his fins, given good water , then its time to treat with meds. or if you notice redness, white fluffy or fuzzy patches...changes in appetite or behavior. unless you see these things, just treat with daily 20-30% waterchanges and feed him 3-4 pellets every other day for a while (for a few weeks anyway until his tank cycles).
any more questions feel free to ask
cheers

He only eats freeze dried bloodworm, anything else he refuses to eat. Also the damage to the lower fin has worsened in a hurry. He doesn't seem his normal self but i will give the clean water a shot. If not do you think Myxazin would be a good idea to treat with?
He seems a bit listless but that might be due to the extensive damage to his lower fin.
I've tested his ammonia and it's at 0. Is it likely to get that high seeing as he's the only fish in a 60L tank? I plan to keep a close eye on it regardless

Ok i think he's going downhill fast it looks like he only has use of one of his fins now, the other is clamped tightly against his body and he's not moving it at all. Also it's gone completely clear. Is it time to medicate him do you think?

if clean water isnt helping then yes, time to medicate. do not use melafix! wont help the situation. you need an antibiotic. make sure to remove the carbon (black stuff) out of the filter before adding the meds. increase aeration if possible and lower the tank temp to 76 if possible.
is he still eating? make sure you presoak the freezedried food until it is soft before you feed the fish...lessens the chance of constipation, which bettas are prone to. you could chop up some garlic, put it in some tankwater in a little cup with his bloodworms until they are soft and then feed him the softened bloodworms that have been in the "garlic juice"...this strengthens their immune system and may tempt him to eat if he is off his food..
good luck...any more questions feel free to ask.

Garlic juice works!

As for normal feeding, get Hikari Betta Bio Gold (pellets) available from Ebay,... Bettas love them! :D

agree with above, garlic is great for any internal infection he may have too.
Crystal clean water & a little aquarium salt is great too.
Ive treated my fish over time with meds & salt
the meds ones all died
the salt ones all lived

salt is a very good idea in this case. take some tank water in a cup and dissolve AQUARIUM (not marine or table) salt at 1teaspoon/gal of water. when the crystals dissolve, add the water to the tank. keep up on water changes! clean water is the most important thing. to remedicate the tank after a water change estimate how many gallons you have removed, and dose accordingly. so say its a 3 gal tank, you took out 1/3 of it you'd need to replace a gallon...so dissolve 1 teaspoon in tank water and add.
the way salt works as a "med" is that it makes the environment less tolerable to bacteria and viruses (and some parasites). it doesnt outright help the fish, but kills off SOME of the bad stuff.
so-
garlic food...aquarium salt and LOTS of water changes.
if he seems to be sulking dont consider that a symptom necessarily. bettas tend to do that when they are introduced to a new tank...it is very common. his clamped fins have me worried but get some salt in there and feed with garlic and see how that goes.
all the best!!
