Heavily planted 2 foot cold water tank containing: substrate of marbles, one large fan tail goldfish, 12 WCM minnows, 2 gigantic Apple snails, 4 zebra snails, breeding colony of gammarus shrimp, breeding colony of tubifex worms – and a 20-year-old piece of bogwood.
Two years ago, some red dots started to appear on the bogwood. They are about 1 mm long, hard as concrete, never move, never hatch out into anything, but there are more and more of them every month. [Tried to post a picture, but photobucket won't work.]
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...

No idea what it might be but I think I would have replaced the bogwood just in case it was something not quite safe.

Abzord, the bog wood has been in the same tank for last twenty years, and harmless for the last two years - too late to worry now!
Thomas, you can't break into one with a thumbnail - ain't no snail eggs I've ever heard of..!

But thanks for the input...

zebra snails lays loads of eggs when fed well which only hatch in acidic water but its a pain to get rid of the eggs.

Thanks k-i-t-s, but are they tiny, red, hard as concrete, and never hatch..?

Sure it's not just natural fungus on the bogwood? They appear like little balls or 'bits' on the wood and are rock hard.
Would look like this but just on a smaller scale:

If so, it's perfectly safe and natural :)
