Hello everyone, I am having a problem with my tank. The tank has cycled with the forum's help about 2 weeks ago. So i did a water change as described in your forums and kept on adding ammina to tank until I introduced fish. 2 days ago i placed 2 small goldfish into the 55gal tank. My levels were Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 80, Ph 7.6. The fish were doing fine until today. When I came in from wrok today (day2 since fish planting) one of the gold fishes has a white coating/burn to body, fins and was dwelling on the bottom with lots of poop. I got really alarmed since all my fish before in this tank died over night having similar symptoms. I placed them right now into quarantine tank, treated the water with stress zyme.
My readings currently are Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, nitrate 10, ph 6.0 ( I always have such low number from the tap, during cycling I did add baking soda as advised from the forum memebrs).
They seem to be doing ok in the quarantine tank for now.
I did plant some low light plants into tank, dont know if this could have dropped the nitrate levels so low. Please help, I do not want to see other fish die again.

Sorry I'm not an expert but just a couple of thoughts that might help....

Can you post a photo of the fish as that might help with a diagnosis. Also what temperature is/was the tank? Nitrates seem a bit on the high side - usually should be around 20ppm as a conservative target.

When you say your current readings are pH 6.0 is that in the main tank or the quarantine tank? Seems quite a big swing in pH for the fish from 7.6 to 6.0?

Phil

I was putting baking soda to bring up the ph as per forum memebrs. It was stable at 7.6 even after a large water change once the tanke cyled an today i find this.

the temp is 78 F currently and they seem to be oing ok in the quarantine tank. The ph 0f 6.0 is in the current tank as well as quarantine thanks to my tap water

the fish is doing better in the q tank, the white stuff is not showing and he is swimming ok, I took the other fish out as well but he had minimal symptoms, something thatlooked like chlorine burn. I just dont understand I changed the water 2 days ago and added stress zyme to treat tap water before adding fish.

Are you sure you were using baking soda and not baking powder?

Also, you might try picking up some seachem prime to use in place of the stress zyme. Many of us have used both and tend to like the former better. That's not a given though.

Sorry for your troubles, don't really have any other ideas on what you're seeing.

Do you do mean stress zyme or stress coat? Because stress zyme is a bacteria-in-a-bottle product, not a dechlorinator. I know some bacteria products are dechlorinators as well, but the manufacturer's website doesn't mention anything about dechlorination for stress zyme.

I am using Stress Coat with Aloe
