Hi All

I need some mega help, over the past week I have had about five male guppies die. Two where very bloated/ swollen and had really bellies. The others I found floating in the tank and never showed any symptoms.

The bloated guppies would just hang at the top of the tank by the filter one day and be gone the next. I also have platties, tetras and rasboras in the tank who all seem to be fine and healthy.

The other day I noticed the water temperature had gone over 30c with the hot weather, from then I left the hood open and stuck a fan by the tank which cooled the water slowly to a decent temp.

I have a Juwel Rio 180, Ammonia and Nitrite are at 0 and Nitrate is around 10ppm. I have also had my water tested at the LFS and was advised the water was fine. My dont think my tank is over stocked, I had about 25 fish.

Now I have another guppy behaving strangely, he is just sitting at the top of the tank by the filter, not being very active and generally just floating.

Someone please help, I do not want to lose any more fish.

Kam

Hi Kam

How long has your tank been set up? Also, how often do you do water changes?
When your male guppies were swollen, did their scales stick out at all or was it just swollen bellies?

Hi

I have had the tank since October last year. It was fully cycled and I have not noticed any scales sticking out.

Could have been the heat. I have been keeping my tank lights off in the day which keeps the temperature down. All you can do is keep an eye for more symptoms. Any signs of white stringy poo ?

I have noticed the temp creep over 30c, but have managed to cool the tank by using a fan.

My platties have been doing white stringy poo, but they have been doing that since I have had them, my guppies have never done white poo.

I had guppies die on me last year during the heat. Maybe they don't do well in low oxygen conditions.  This year just one disappeared but so far I had a betta, a forktail rainbow and an otto die as well, all of them from different tanks. Temp reached up to 32 in one of my tanks and have been high for a month. Guppies don't do well in such heat from my experience. Make sure there's very good surface movement for the time being and keep the temperature down.

It probably is the heat. But have you changed their food recently. That happened to me once. I chanhed their food and they started to get bloated, some of then died until i realized it was the food and went back to my old brand.
