it all started with 3 weeks ago when i bought a new female guppy. i am not sure what really went wrong, but afterwards things are very messed up. in 3 days some of the older guppies in my tank caught fin rot, wel it seems i took care of that with 1 guppy dead. then some more died after next few days in addition to one of my panda .... and i notice there is anchor worm attached on to one of my guppies. then it also died soon after along with more fish. just now the female guppy i just bought also passed away right before she is about to give brith, all i have left is just 2 guppies that i breed,4 tetras, 3 cories .... what happened?

i mean i changed water, added more salt in to the tank and medication i just don't understand why they still keep dying. 1 more thing, only guppies are mainly killed in this cased.

PH: 7.5

hey guys i got the tests done for my water:

Ph 7.5
GH 40
KH 30mg/L
Ammonia <0.6
Nitrite 0.1

so how is this????? i lost a whole batch of guppies that i breeed due to this..... not good.... for neon tertas? i noticed that among 10 of them only 2 will last more then 4 months i mean thats wut happened i used to have 12+ neons but they die after 2 months of so but after that the remaining neons are extremely healty.... i have 2 of them that is about 6 months+ old in the tank

also i think all of my guppies is about to die due to this plaque.... should i just change 100% of the water and wash everything and have a recycle again?

get back to us with the water perimeters as soon as you can
alot of illnesses can be caused by bad water (like too high nitrates etc)
its nothing to feal bad about, we have all had bad water at one point in time ;)

if you can't afford an at home testing kit, your local fish store will usually test your water free of charge

also i think you should know that corydoras (or "cory") should not have salt in their water
it won't do imediate harm, butit will do internal damage to their organs in the long run
so just don't put any more in your tank and it will slowly be rid through regular water changes

lastly if your water turns out to be good then i would swich lfs! (local fish stores)
they obviously have very sickly stock and may be contaminating your tank :X

with mostly guppies being affected it sounds very much like flexibacter columnaris or tetrahymena. Both are devastating if not caught quickly. Both are indications of a water quality issue. So first off do 20-30% water changes with gravel vacs for the next several days. Both of these are very hard to get rid of but formalin and malachite green meds have been known to be effective. just watch out for scaleless fish and small tetras as these guys find malachite green toxic if the dosage is too great. perhaps maracyn or maracyn II would be of use as well. As i mentioned though the primary thing is to get the bottom and water clean and then try the meds if required. Good luck and keep us posted. :)

I have noticed that everyone has a fish that they can't keep, maybe yours is guppies, mine is Gouramis. Grrrr...I hate them!!! They are really pretty and all that but they always die!

I have to ask a couple of questions. How old is this tank? What type of tank maintenance do you perform and on what schedule. with ammonia and nitrite both positive it appears as if this tank is cycling for some reason. In an established tank this can occur if too many fish are added at one time, if the bacteria or part of it is killed off by meds or chlorine or excessive cleaning or cleaning the filter parts under tap water. Also do can you get your own test kits, this will enable you to do scheduled and emergency tests and perhaps avoid this type of thing in the future (just a bit of advice not blaming you for anything).
I would do a 25% water change today to see if you can get rid of the ammonia and nitrite and to help reduce the stress level of the fish. Also one of the most important tests in an established tank is the nitrate test as it indicates if the water quality is suffering.

Neons are very sensitive to nitrite and nitrate levels so this may be the problem with the neon deaths. they like a very stable tank and will thrive when all levels are kept constant or well managed. Keep us posted :)
