Just rescued another 2 goldies. Were kept in smallish bowls with no filters but at least owners did watewr changes and even had dechlor.
Fish no 1 - several scales seem to be raised and coming off, no regular pattern. looks like loose tiles on roof after a storm! Also saw it open its moith into a sort of tube shape, take in water then appear to "vomit" water. Did this twice.
Fish no 2 -no ill symptoms except very bloated tummy. Female with eggs? Don;t know how old it is or its sex so maybe bloating is due to something else?
QUESTIONS
What is causing bloating, loose scales and vomiting water.
How do I treat it, if anything should be done
Is it serious
Is it contagious -would rather throw away nets, bucket etc than risk killing all my other fish.

I am getting a large tank on Wed and planned to add these latest 2 to my other rescued goldies to make it easier for flatmate who knows nothing about fish to feed fish as i have to go away for 10 days on Fri morning. Is it safe to do so or will I risk spreading disease?

Do they flick or rub? I have read Yawning (opening their mouths like you discribe) can be a sign of internal parasites, the best treatment for this I have found is Sterazin. The bloating and raised scales sounds like dropsy and can be hard to treat, unfortunately I have no experience treating it but I think its a coarse of antibacterial meds or maybe antibiotics, hopefully someone else can recommend something that can help.

Does the goldfish look like this?

Are the scales coming off in the bloated area.

Feed some shelled peas.
Epson salt baths to help draw fluids out.
Don't feed any other foods for af few days.

Yawning can mean the fish is flushing it gills.
How the fish breathing.
Do the gills look pale with excess slime, or red and inflamed.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Also yawning can be a sign of gills flukes.

Get you some info.

Sticking head out of water and squirting (black-flushing gills) water (dinoflagellates, gill problems)

Thanks for your advice. Checked photo, definitely not dropsy. I have 2 rescued fish. The one with raised scales isn't swollen and not all the scales are raised as in dropsy. As I said, the raised scales look like loose roof tiles after a storm! The swollen bellied fish has no other symptoms. Both are still lying on the gravel substrate after 24 hours and the raised scales one has its tail sort of folded in. Doesn't appear to be swim bladder problem though as both fish came to the surface to feed when I added some fish flakes and have normal appetites.

My only concern is that I have to go away on Fri. I'm getting a large tank on Wed and was planning to move these latest 2 in with my other goldies and a new weather loach but I'm worried about spreading disease if the latest fish are sick. What do you think, would it be safe to put them in with the others?

Good news about the other goldie I rescued 12 days ago. It's now in a tank with my original 2- swimming happily, feeding well and socialising with other fish. Apart from being stunted, about half the size it should be, it now looks like a normal healthy happy fish. It had me very worried as it lay still on the bottom for 2 days barely moving but seems to have adapted well to a larger space and clean water. Previous owner kept it in small bowl filled with murky brown filthy water.

Personally I would leave them in quaranteen for a couple of weeks if you can just to see if there is anything else wrong with them. So pleased to read its not dropsy, fingers crossed they are ok and they are just adjusting the a new clean tank.
