Help Me ! My Fry Are Dying!

hi, for about a week ago i my fish gave birth to fry's, i was on a two day vacation at that time so when i got home i could only save 2 fry's. now i have them in a bowl next to the tank, but i dont have a filter for it... i cant afford annother tank because i am a student and i dont have a job yet.
what can i do? is there sone way i can get the frys together with the other fish ? =(

hi, u could use a net, this would be better than a filter-less bowl.....i had fry with no filter in a 2g last week with no filter and they all died...but now i have 30 fry in a 5g with a filter and a water change daily and they are all still with me at 5days old. i think a net would be best in your situation, if there are only 2 fry a net would be alright

Your other option would be to float the bowl in the top of the main tank, this will at least keep the temperature close to that of the tank.
Then do regular water changes of the bowl, take out around 50% of the water from the bowl and replace with water from the tank.
Make sure when you do this you are removing all uneaten food from the bowl. If you change the water 2 or 3 times a day then your fry should be fine
You might also want to add a small airstone and pump to provide some water movement, but not too much flow.

you can buy nets that have "hooks" or something that will attch it to the side of the tank.

sorry, by net i meant a breeder net which are designed to hold fry in the tank while preventing other fish eating the, they are cheap (i think) and would be the best if you can't supply another tank and filter. even with the net you need to clean out the uneaten food and poo as nets don't have the best circulation

The only reason that I offered the bowl as an alternative, is that although you have to change the water in it, I find it easier to 'hoover' the rubbish out of the bottom of the bowl, than I do a net. Also, the way the rest of my fish are trying to eat teh fry THROUGH the bowl, I think they would be getting knocked about a fiar bit if they were in a net.

i had baby cat fish i had like 100 of them in a small tank. i would buy a very cheap filter and do water changes

mind, its not white anymore just a lovely brown colour

i think its kinda acting as a filter!

I just let mine be in my tank (platy fry) because I find that 1) they are near impossible to catch and 2) they actually fend quite well for themselves - currently 10 survivors are in my tank and they are past the point of being of an eatable size for their parents and other inhabitants. But as mentioned by most of the above ^ a breeding trap/net/box type thing would really help them out, and you wont break the bank buying heaters,filters etc. Mine cost about £5 (pocket money) and its a breeding trap cos I tried to put the mother who was giving birth in the trap. It worked, but I left her in there because she looked full of fry still, and she ate the fry who swam up trough the holes :'(, but one fry didn't swim up and was recently released into the tank .

Personally i would opt for the plastic floating trap as opposed to a net,they get very messy quickly!

A friend of mine made an emergency fry container by cutting large windows on two sides of a big soda bottle, cutting the top off, some pebbles on the bottom for weight (to keep it upright) and stuffing the whole thing inside a stocking.

I once made a similar thing for my glow light when it started nipping the feelers off the apple snails- I got a water bottle, cut off the bottom, took off the cap, punched some small holes and put it over him and dug it a little into the gravel. He was only recently released and hes stopped nipping (maybe forgot his old trick!).

i prefer the net as the plastic ones float everywhere, and with the flow that would just be a nuisance
