Help Me Id This Guy

hey guys.

i'm pretty short on information about cichlids, and now i need help identifying this guy. I caught him on my last dipnetting trip a couple of weeks ago.
usually we find a lot of mayan cichlids down here in florida, but when i compare him to the mayan cichlids I have caught before, there are many differences:
- body seems rounder, body color is golden yellow instead of gray, has more body bars than mayan, bars are very dark, has red eye

thats difficult for some reason, i wanted to go mayan aswell, also thinking about Amphilophus labiatus

in a different forum i was told this is Tilapia buttikoferi.
once i looked it up the description matches and tilapia is something we're supposed to have plenty of down here, so it wouldn't surprise me.
the only thing i notice different is none of the pictures online of T. buttikoferi have red eyes, and my guy does, but it might just be a juvenile thing.

It is deffo some kind of Tilapia...i don't think Buttikoferi tho.

Chances are its a hybrid. There are a number of tilapia species found in florida now. Plus a bunch of CA cichlids as well.

I answered in your old world thread, I thought T.buttikoferi as well, but it also might be T.mariae or a mix of the two. T.mariae has the red eyes and stripes like yours, but main part of the coloration seems to be a bit more golden in the pics I could find.

well the consensus is that it's a Tilapia species...

online pictures make it look more like T. buttikoferi because T. mariae has spots and no bars, and this fish has bars and no spots. yet it has red eyes like T. mariae and not T. buttikoferi. So the idea of it being a juvenile T. mariae makes sense, as the "spots" could come in later?

either way i'll grow it out for a couple of months and then take it from there.
