Hi,

Sorry to cross post, but this is the only way I figure to get some photos up.

Can anyone identify this cichlid, I have 4 of them all at various stages but i don't think any are adult yet. They are mainly silver with a hint of blue, with vertical black stripes stopping before the tail fin. On my largest (2") there is a faint red mark on the tail fin close to the body. I bought them and tried to remember the name but failed! , not good with scientific names, begins with an A (I think), next time I'll write it down, was a while ago so the FS dosn't remember.

Hopefully some photos are here...... :/

Thanks

my guess would be that they are definatly juvinile, and probably more than likely new world, did the LFS have a common name for you when you got them? caquetaia and that is only my guess based on the mouth structure as to what species well this is a really really thin limb that I am climbing out on I would say check out myersi

No common name, or I might of had a chance at remembering it :(

They did say they were supposed to be rare?!?

not sure though coz they weren't expensive

Thanks for the help,

think i have identified it with the help of www.cichlid-forum.com ,

Archocentrus Centrarchus!

Thats a flyer cichlid! super rare cichlid but i suppose if u want one you could get one, min tank of 40g and have a bad temper like convicts so forget about tank mates for now and they also hit about 10"

At the moment I have four, 1" to 2", they seem to be friendly?!,

It definatley matches the pictures on this site I found, and it mentions that they make a good community fish, but it also states Neutral PH??

Is this cichlid from lake malawi??

can anyone confirm or otherwise if this is an aggressive cichlid and if the details on this site are accurate in anyones opinion.?

fishindex

They are in a 180L (uk) with 6 tetras (everyones getting along fine for now!)

Thanks

New World Cichlids are from South america, where as Cichlids from lake Maliwi, lake Victoria, lake Tanganyika, etc. are known as African Cichlids. Most New World Cichlids prefere a neutral to mildly acidic pH.

There also from Central America where they dont have acidic water.
Yes they are agressive as i said in my other post. They have a temper like a convict cichlid.

Thanks for the info,

but has anyone looked at the link I posted?,

here's the link

It seems to have some conflicting information, (I'm guessing wrong).

could someone just confirm that>

Archocentrus Centrarchus is

New World,

Likes neutral PH,

Grows BIG, 10"?

And is Aggressive (mine are friendly so far).

There dosn't seem to be any other cichlid that looks anything like mine other than the Archocentrus Centrarchus.

Sorry I'm confused!

I thought that flyer Cichlids only grew 4 or 5 inch's and were only mildly aggressive (the link seems to agree with that). I did know that their fry feed off of the parents slime coat though. :/

EDIT: Hmm, the site says that you found the "Flier" Cichlid under lake Malawi Cichlids, but it displays the same water parameters typical to a South American Cichlid, maybe it was just a miscategorization.

At last!,

two different sources of information that agree! :D

Thanks Frank ,

I'm slowly getting the picture, I think you're right with the miscatagorization :fun:
