Help I Have An Oil Film In My Tank

TBH, I used this method for many years until I was `shouted at` in a local shop for doing so. The guy who worked there told me I shouldn`t be filling directly from a hose for various reasons. I might start doing it again now after reading this thread :good:

Well you have to make sure to dechlorinate it, and make sure the temperature is the same. Geoff1991, in some cases in South American fish, they will start to reproduce due to the flooding the rainy season brings. I do not fully agree with you in that they like a temperature change, I think a small temperature change is bearable and a signal for reproduction in the case I stated, I would not go as far as to say they like temperature change.

It is still better in a lot of cases to age your water, but it gives you time for the water to gas off, especially if you have lots of C02 in the water which can change pH.

I always refill with a hose
How else would you do a 30% water change on a 90 gallon tank? gilling up 5 gallon buckets back and forth?

I just remove water, add dechlor, and slowly fill the tank back up. I match the water from the tap to around the same as the tank. a 5 degree difference on a 30% water change equals about 1.3 degree change in tank temp. Factor in i fill it up slowly so the heater catches up rather quickly.

Like someone else mentionned, when you go swimming in a lake, the temperature varies greatly with the current so a few degrees won't harm your fish! Some users here keep stingrays and fill up with cold tap water!

Ahh oh dear.
I use a hose (filling from a cold tap), do 50% water changes on all my tanks, and don't add dechlor, and all my fish are still living.
That's not to say the people's water supply who smells of chlorine shouldn't use dechlorinator.

I use a hosepipe in my 200 litre to do a 60 litre water change every week, I syphon 2 30 litre drums out of the tank, add decholinator to the tank and fill up using a dedicated hose from the outside tap. I have never had any fishy fatalites doing so in the last 2 years..
