Help! Fish Not Active?

Ok i have just returned from my football match and one of my mail guppies was sitting on the bottom it is breathing and has now started moving around but i t did not look great before. All my other fish seem a lot less active as well.

Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0.25 ?
Nitrate 40/50

Should i do a 25% water change?

Ammonia and Nitrite should be kept at 0 at all times. A 50% water change would be good

What test are you using to test the water?

How long has the tank been running? Is it cycled?

You should do a huge water change now. 50% or more. They need to be down to 0 As said above how long has your tank been running? Whats its history

(If I were you I would brush up on the fish-in cycling thread and be prepared to do a water change any time the readings for ammonia or nitrite is anything but zero.)

How many fish did you get and did you wait the full 7 qualifying days in the end? Did you increase your dosing from 2 ppm every 24 hours to 4 ppm every 24 hours or 2ppm every 12 hours?

Otherwise, I recommend you toss in a few plants and do water changes to keep nitrite low until the filter catches up with the fish bio-load.

Ok, first thing that stands out to me is that you have a betta alongside guppies......from personal experience I would strongly advise against that. Guppies are pretty sensitive and it strikes me that the guppies could be stressed. All may appear to be fine when you`re watching the tank but it is common knowledge that a betta can and does on many an occasion be aggressive, especially if the guppies have colourful or flowing tails. Can you possibly remove the betta for a while just to gauge whether or not the guppies will perk up?

Did you do 100% water change before adding fish? What's your pH and hardness? Are both guppies male?

+1 they can be not that good together, but they have worked for me on occasion.

- Yes 100% water change before i added the fish.
- The pH is 7.6.
- How do i check the hardness?
- Both guppies are male.
- The betta has been keeping its self to its self as far as i have seen. however there is slight damage to guppies tail.


But then they all seem to be a bit nippy apart from the Betta lol

Why did you get guppies and betta for the same tank? And who sold you those? They should know better to advise you against it.

You check hardness with tests for general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH).. or be cheeky and get your LFS to do it instead of paying for the tests.

7.6 is high for tetras, to be honest.. that could have caused the problem. It is perfect for guppies, but obviously someone else in there is having a problem with them.. be careful, they will almost certainly get fin rot.
