I did my est today with an API master test kit. Here are the results:

PH 7.6
High range PH 8
Amonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm

I didn't do the other nitrate test. from reading the leaflet my amonia and nitrate are prefect but what about my PH isn't that high? I wanted guppies and Platy.
Can anyone advise me on my results and if it's ok to get some fish yet. Thanks

do the nitrIte test then advice can be given.

NitrAte isnt a huge concern and is reduced by weekly water changes.

PH is whatever comes out of your tap, most fish can adjust to it but some cant.

Also for those who havnt been following any of your other posts, this one will only lead to more questions regarding your tank, i.e. how long has it been cycled. more info from yourself = better feedback from others. ;)

Hi marieukxx!

Too little info (at least for me.) I see other threads where it appears you are obtaining gear and getting in to the hobby, but I can't make out what your goals are.

Are you preparing to do a standard Add&Wait Fishless Cycle? That usually goes per our baseline article by RDD, titled Fishless Cycling in the Beginners Resource Center and you post up a fishless cycling thread with a bunch of baseline info about your tank, tap water and so forth. Whether or not you've been able to obtain mature media is important and what type of simple household ammonia you've been able to obtain.

A single battery of tests on a tank is not really significant except in the context of days or weeks of a cycling process. The members are great and will help you!

no, Nitr I te

If you got the API freshwater kit, its a single bottle with 5 drops, should be very light blue for a good reading.

Not the two bottle Nitr A te test.

I posted the result of that in my first post

Sorry. The tank was second hand. Emptied that day and brought straight to me and I filled it imediately and witched on. The filter was 6 months old and still all wet. I set it up monday and it's been running since then. First test today. I was told as it was an old tank I may be ok to add a few fish now.

How did you know that I added the wrong bottle. I added 5 drops of the nitrate 1 bottle by mistake and it was yellow.

Just did it again and it's light blue 0

You need to be adding fish or ammonia immediately, or the bacteria will starve.

Did you dechlorinate the new water when you added it?

NB: there is nitrite and nitrate, I and A, they're two different things. You meant nitrite in the first post, right?

Your pH is perfect for guppies and platys.

I'll assume a spelling mistake with Nitrate when you meant nitrite. This would mean your water readings are safe for fish to live in.

HOWEVER, The filter hasnt had any ammonia fed to it for days, so you have a choice, you can go to boots and buy some household ammonia and dose up the tank and see if it processes over night or you can go buy half a dozen fish and do daily water tests for a week. This later option could of course lead to you doing a "fish in cycle" if the filter isnt ready, which will mean daily water changes of up to 50% for 4 weeks or more. The choice, is yours, but either way, you need to act on it relatively soon, because if the filter IS cycled and ready for you, with no ammonia from either the fish, or a bottle, the bacteria in it will start to die soon.

That should be fine.. get either 3 males, 3 females or 1 male and 2 females.

What size is the tank?
